Sectarian violence against Syria’s Alawite minority became a huge matter in early March, when massacres left well over 1,300 people dead and the ruling Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) insisting the matter was over and an investigation would happen.
The probe has been delayed since then, and the violence slowed but never really stopped. Over the weekend, yet more killings were reported, with at least 11 Alawites slain according to various reports.
At least nine civilians were reported killed on Saturday in attacks in the Latakia Governorate. The biggest incident happened in a village on the outskirts of Jableh, where gunmen attacked and killed a number of Alawites, including an 8th grade student. Two of the slain were reportedly beheaded.

The area around Jableh was also where the first killings in the early March massacre took place. Latakia Governorate is where a large portion of Syria’s Alawite minority lives, and when fighting turned to mass executions the villages in Latakia were among the main targets.
In addition to Latakia, violence has been reported in the Homs Governorate against Alawites lately as well. Two Alawite taxi cab drivers from a nearby village were reported shot to death within Homs by unnamed gunmen.
Alawites make up around 10% of Syria’s population. Their religion is somewhat distinct but has commonalities with Shi’ite Islam, and the fact that the Assad family, who ruled Syria before the HTS took power in late 2024, has made Alawites a common target for supporters of the new government, who often present Alawites as necessarily “remnants” of the Assad government.
In reality, many Alawites note they weren’t always treated very well by the previous government either, and were afraid that the Islamist HTS would make them scapegoats for everything the Assad-era officials did.
Though the HTS has tried to present the repeated massacres as something happening external to their rule, many of the biggest attacks were carried out by forces loyal to the defense ministry and interior ministry, and despite promises of investigations into people “abusing” their position for sectarian violence, nothing has come of any of those investigations so far.
Syria with 12 million displaced human beings and over 500,000 civilian casualties, there would be some welcome relief if those most responsible for the heinous and barbaric crimes committed against civilians during the Syrian Civil War were held to account. I hope this mess does not flare up again.
Problem- the ICC has limited jurisdiction in Syria as it is not a party to the Rome Statute (the ICC’s governing treaty). The only other means by which the ICC could investigate alleged crimes committed in Syria is via a United Nations Security Council referral. However, as is well documented, Russia, was a strong ally of the Assad regime, has vetoed or threatened to veto all efforts by the Security Council to refer the situation in Syria to the ICC.
Jordan, Palestine, and Tunisia are the only ICC member states in the MENA region. Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Israel have not ratified the Rome Statute.
The ICC generally cannot investigate crimes committed in Syria unless the UN Security Council refers the situation to the court. If the new government in Syria recognizes the ICC’s jurisdiction, it could pave the way for Assad’s crimes to be prosecuted.
ICC arrest warrant against Assad:
Experts agree that evidence obtained from prisons, mass graves after regime's fall can play major role in efforts to prosecute Syria's deposed leader.

Who has been pampering
ISISAl QaedaHTS all this time? "We are the nazis" also in Syria, we are the ones promoting genocide and the worst religious fanaticism.Precisely.
What did D.C. brain dead think was going to happen when they armed and trained the head-choppers.
Exactly this. That’s what they wanted: Talibanistan here, Talibanistan there, all the rest is propaganda or at best playing both sides. Sunni Islamic fanatic sectarianism has been all this time at the service of Western and especially Anglosaxon colonialism, the Salafists are determined to eradicate the Shias, the communists, the secularists (and anyone else in Muslim-majority areas) before ever considering even facing Zionism. And that plays perfectly well in the Zionist and more broadly Anglosaxon imperialist agenda: “they want to be our cannon fodder useful fools?, fine”.
