Beginning late Wednesday, the Syrian Islamist rebel faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a major offensive out of the Idlib Province into the Aleppo Province. The result is heavy fighting and airstrikes, and it is now being reported HTS has reached the city of Aleppo itself.
HTS captured over 50 towns and villages on the way from Idlib Province to Aleppo, which is the second largest city in Syria. The most recent figure available is that as many as 400 people, mostly combatants, have been killed in the fighting. A number of others have also been killed in airstrikes by Syria and Russia’s air forces, at least 19 on Thursday alone.
The Russia-backed counter-offensive was aimed at keeping HTS out of the important city, which before the Syrian Civil War was the nation’s industrial hub. It seems HTS has reached at least five neighborhoods of Aleppo, in western districts of the town.
Syria’s Army was a lot more upbeat on their prospects, saying they had “repelled” a major offensive into Aleppo, despite evidence that HTS forces are still in the city and some claims their fighter had reached the city’s center. The army also reported that they had reclaimed some towns and villages lost yesterday in the offensive, though that can’t yet be confirmed.
It is fair to say the counter-offensive isn’t going as well as planned, and there are some reports indicating that Russia’s heavy air commitment to the ongoing Ukraine War meant a smaller force left behind in Syria, and that force was slow to react to the surprise offensive.
Syria’s military has reportedly added special forces into the area of western Aleppo. This is likely a response to how poorly the fight has been going on the ground, and the fact that this fight is including more than just HTS fighters.
Indeed, the Turkish-backed Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has joined the HTS offensive, and is fighting against Syrian forces in the same area.
HTS has dubbed their offensive operation “Deter the Aggression,” and says the effort is meant to prevent Syria, Russia and Iran from pushing into Idlib Province, which they hold. The fighting has also shut down the M5 highway, which connects Damascus and Aleppo. They have also reportedly neared the M4 highway, which leads eastward out of Aleppo. That’s likely to make deployments of further reinforcements by Syria’s government more difficult in the days to come.
HTS formed in early 2017 as a merger of several Islamist militant groups, centering initially around fighting Jabhat al-Nusra but ultimately merging with them as well. Jabhat al-Nusra was effectively the Syrian wing of al-Qaeda, though they broke with them publicly in 2016. Despite that, HTS maintains much of the underlying rhetoric of al-Qaeda.
Publicly, HTS and their leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani has tried to disavow al-Qaeda and ISIS and has courted favor with the US. He has styled the civilian body in HTS-dominated Idlib the Syrian Salvation Government. It has long been suspected that this rebranding was more about trying to turn Syrian Sunni Islamist factions into a more palatable partner for Western involvement in the region than any major ideological differences with the international jihadists.
The West has a history of backing some of the more local Sunni Islamist groups in the Syrian Civil War. Indeed, the HTS ties with Ukraine’s government underscores that many see them as a practical partner in their respective regional wars. This could be a growing concern for the Syrian government, as what was once a contained problem in the Idlib Province looks to explode outward starting many of the same fights all over again.
"100s dead as American proxy forces reach Aleppo"
We all know that the CIA is behind this, with the blessings of our master, Israel.
The big and powerful U.S. of Amnesia is a vassal of the "chosen", the Zionists of Israel.
Syria is no threat to the U.S.
Iran is no threat to the U.S.
So it goes……………
I bet they got their arms from US provided weapons to Ukraine underground market via Black sea and Turkey…! And Israel is helping them on intelligence and logistics…!
US Congress easily passed that $120 BILLION War bill in April. That can buy a lot of weapons.
Sure. That way.
Also behind is Ukraine which is kicking Putin's ass in that front as well. What is Putin going to do now?
Send more rubles, troops, and equipment? No, he has nothing left. Maybe make some desperate nuclear threats as usual.
Hate on that.
Glory to Ukraine!!!
Riiiight……………..
Peace and Quiet in the Middle East is a major threat to the US.
Hence the ongoing US commitment to sowing chaos, disorder, and factional antagonism, especially Shia vs. Sunni.
Uproar and unrest are not unwanted side effects, they are the primary intended effects. And the Israelis are a useful tool to disguise US strategy as "protecting the Jewish state".
"ome reports indicating that Russia’s heavy air commitment to the ongoing Ukraine War meant a smaller force left behind in Syria"
Oh, yeah? I read that Middle East Eye article below this one. It's quoting some clown at The Atlantic Council – the most anti-Russian organization in existence.
Take that with a huge truck-trailer load of salt.
Is there a The Pacific Council taking up an anti-DPRC position, or does The Heritage Foundation pretty much corner the market on outlandish anti-Chinese rhetoric ?
MEE is Qatari: 200% aligned with Erdogan.
Yup
The alqaeda militants in idlib are Turkish assets. It's unfortunate that Turkey apparently favours restarting the Syrian war.
Check out the resources under Syrian soil.
Any country with our "interests" (not ours) is fair game for us. Pacts with the devil(s) mean nothing to us. Just get those d*mn resources.
“Peace Train, peace train! Ride on the Peacectrain!
Come take me home again!”
the Chinese army has over 150,000 female soldiers in it's army.
the US, on the other hand, has a bunch of Ronald McDonalds pretending to be Navy Seals.
LOL spy on that you MF's
And the US Army has 230,000 females. What is your point?
Of which will never be in a forward position.
Jason Please… They're not rebels…! They're daylight plain terrorists…! And more than half of them are not Syrians…!
It does get confusing who are the "Rebels", "Freedom Fighters" and "Terrorists".
It's easy, our terrorists are the 'freedom fighters.'
It all depends whose ox is being gored.
Sure, anyone supported by the West, Turkey, and Ukraine is a terrorist, neo nazi, criminal or a combination.
You nailed it…!
“Publicly, HTS and their leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani has tried to disavow al-Qaeda and ISIS and has courted favor with the US”
Oh wow. Wonderful. So we’re not pretending anymore that ISIS and co are definitely not funded by you know who to help topple the Assad regime? I mean, I got to give props for to them and the US war mongers. At least they’re being honest this time.

Assange
Emails: ISIS/ISIL funded by Saudis and Qataris
Hillary Clinton sent the largest arms sales to Saudis as secretary of state, while Saudis donated large amounts to the Clinton Foundation.
Bernie is such a disappointment. Years ago he called for the overthrow of the Syrian government (Assad). He has said the same about Putin.
He harps about stopping weapons and money to Israel, but does not speak of Palestinians rights except to use the dead phrase, "two state solution", knowing full well it will not sell.
I don't know if I can trust him anymore.
They may pretend whatever but we all know they are DAESH (ISIS) 3.0 and Al Qaeda 2.0, which was DAESH 2.0 and DAESH pre-alpha. They are all the same Takfiri fascists and most of them are not even Syrian but immigrant mercenary terrorists brought there from other places like Tunisia or Uyghuristan even.

The only reason the Syrians are involved with the Ukraine/CIA is because they oppose Russian intervention in Syria.
You are right, Ukraine is fighting Russia in every front.
You are right, Ukraine is fighting Russia in every front.
Ya Salam! just in time for the approaching inauguration and that all important transition period. There are no coincidences in politics, and I wonder how these cretins just happened upon all these new trucks, arms, equipment, ammunition, bombs etc….Must be the weapons fairy from Martha's Vineyard.
Yes, that damn intervention keeps the slaughter going.
To better understand the different interests involved in Syria and the Middle East and to more appropriately analyze accurately keep these points in mind.
1. The majority identification in the Middle East is Sunni Islam
2. Given that everyone is suffering in the Middle East, the Sunnis are oppressed the most. (some minorities suffer because they choose to align with foreign intervention rather than come to terms with the majority, e.g., Lebanese phalange).
3. All state actors in the ME fear a unified Sunni federation.
4. Once big power intervention (e.g., US, Russia) is out of the ME Muslim civil society will come together.
5. Sunni/Shia divide is real but make no mistake that that the Arabs and Persians have existed and shared the region for thousands of years. The Turks are relatively newcomers –only a thousand years ago. (The "foreigners" are Roman invaders, the Crusades, the Mongols, the British, the French, Israel, America and Russia.)
6. Attempts at labeling groups as ISIS and Qaeda amounts to conspiracy theories. Most Syrians, certainly the Sunni ones reject Alawi Baathism. Iran and Hezbollah align with Asad because he oppresses the Sunnis. Common interests. Otherwise, Alawis are considered apostates in mainstream shiasim. Baathism is totally rejected by both Sunni and Shia creeds. Extremist groups like ISIS and Qaeda exist because US, Russia, Israel and Arab regimes brutally, violently and consistently crush any manifestation of Arab and Sunni unity. (e.g., *Arbakan becomes Turkish Prime Minister, overthrown by secular military, *FIS swept provincial elections in Algeria, crushed, *MB swept elections in Egypt, crushed, *Hamas won election in Palestine, sanctioned and genocided, *MB in Yemen poised to win elections in Yemen, invaded by SA, UAE and US, *"Islamists" in Kuwait gain a super-majority, parliament disbanded, *MB in Jordan participates in elections, King riggs elections to prevent future wins, *MB in Morocco win elections, placed on a tight leash and undermined by the King to transfer blame, *In Libya the only thing the majority agrees on is implementing sharia, turned into a failed state by US, the West and corrupt Arab regimes, *same in Iraq.)
7. Sunni desire at unification is no pipe dream but reality based on facts. If the English speaking world can coordinate intelligence sharing and unite to oppose the entire world over Israel, for example, or the continent of Europe can temporarily come together as the EU, the Sunni ME (and its minorities) has stronger realities and foundations for coming together. A) they share the same language B) contiguous land mass conducive for sharing ideas and commerce from Morocco to China C) the same religion D) a lived historical experience of shared identity (e.g., under the Ottomans a citizen could travel from Morocco to the borders of Iran without a passport.) E) All polls indicate the majority of the people want sharia law. F) A last unifying factor but not least the overwhelming desire to extricate that cancer from Palestine.
8. And you think that all that blood that has been shed in the ME to keep the majority population oppressed, killed, genocided and displaced has no response?
9. These young Syrian fighters (and foreign jihadis) you call terrorists all over the ME have now tasted blood and nothing will quench their thirst until the corrupt regimes and their western backers are defeated.
10. And guess what is the biggest incentive to unify all these youth who have been "radicalized?" ANSWER: Alaqsa Mosque and it has been initiated by "Alaqsa Flood."
Excellent summation!
@donnavolatile:disqus I don't like to present things in such hyperbolic terms but it's frustrating even on an anti war platform that so many are ignorant of the region our country has been intervening in for nefarious reasons for decades. Events and groups are naively interpreted and assessed not based on an understanding of history, religion and motivations but on western centric/American exceptionalist, narrow minded partisan politics.
I have so many questions for you. I will start here:
Why are the “rebel” groups fighting against Syria and not helping the Palestinians? Once Al Assad/Russia is gone, hypothetically, it only paves a clearer path for US-Israeli imperialism to take control, not for a free standing Sunni state.
A prior wikileaks Clinton memo shows that al-Qaeda/ISIS was working for the US in Syria funded/armed by way of the Saudis, who were armed by Clinton after a large donation to her “charity” . Would you say this is a corrupted group, an arm of US empire?
@existentialdread:disqus@donnavolatile:disqus It's precisely how accurately one views the historical reality on the ground in order to appreciate the situation. There are 22 Arab member states that make up the Arab League. They are united by language and border contiguity (except the Comoros). Other than that they are designed for division, as envisaged by the Sykes/Picot agreement arbitrarily dividing Ottoman holdings in the region into "nation states."
Recall, the British promised if the Arabs fought with them against the Turks in WWI they would have an Arab nation that included the gulf countries, Iraq and most of the Levant. We know how that turned out. Just to give an illustration of this folly, observe how the British dealt with the gulf countries that fell to their control and influence. In the biggest country, Saudi Arabia they were given a king, (Kingdom of) in Oman he would be a sultan (Sultanate of) in the UAE it was divided among 7 emirates titled Sheikhs, the Kuwaitis, Qataris and Bahrainis were honored with the title of Emirs (princes). Any sane person would have united this area into one.
Syria is the kingpin of the area historically known as bilad ash Sham. It consists of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine. In order for Israel to exist it is absolutely necessary to keep this area divided and weak.
Historically speaking it was almost always the case that if any empire wanted the Holy Land, for example, they would have to fortify that holding by exerting control over its surroundings (i.e., bilad ash sham). This happened when Rome controlled Palestine for about 7 centuries. When the Muslims conquered Jerusalem in the 7th century CE (by surrender not battle) they conquered and held Syria first.
This explains why the Crusades of the 12th-13th centuries established a beachhead but couldn't survive beyond 1291. It also explains why Saladin who controlled Egypt and parts of As Sham did not conquer Jerusalem (also by negotiated surrender) in 1187 until he unified Syria and Iraq as well.
Apologies for the historical background. To answer the question.
FIRST: Why are the “rebel” groups fighting against Syria and not helping the Palestinians?
SHORT ANSWER: They want to but can't. They need to clean house first.
Asad is a state actor, however, he is beholden and limited by his benefactors, Iran and Russia. They saved him from being toppled in the "arab spring." Russia and Iran both oppose Sunni control of Syria. The Iranians oppose it because it interferes with their "shiite crescent" which starts in Iran goes through, Iraq into Syria and Lebanon. The russians oppose it because it would deprive them of their only warm water naval base in the middle east. In addition to rejection of communism, the sunnis are opposed to Russian domination of the Muslim Caucasus, chechnya, crimea and the Muslim central Asian states that used to be a part of the Soviet Union.
The US, Israel and the west also oppose sunni dominance in Syria (and the region). This is why you have so many "rebel" groups in Syria. Each backed by outside intervention to serve the various interests involved and to divide Syria.
The Syrians are made up of Sunni Arabs, Sunni Kurds, Alawis (non Muslim minority sect), Christians. The last census before the Arab spring showed that Sunni Arabs were well over 60% of the population. They began a non violent revolution rejecting Asad family rule and baathism.
As long as Syria is divided it can not participate in the liberation of palestine as it has historically done.
To show that the history lesson is not so far off in the past. Hamas calls its military wing Izzedine Al Qassam. Who is he? He is a Syrian Muslim preacher who fought the British and Zionist control over Palestine in the 1920-30's.
The "sincere" Syrian rebels are itching to go to Palestine but they have to fight it out with all the other interests and interventions keeping Syria weak and divided.
What Hamas and Hezbollah have shown is that Israel is a paper tiger, America is exhausted and can't win a war of attrition in the middle east.
The fate of the Arab regimes lies in the outcomes of what happens in Syria. They fear that if Syria fell to Sunni rule. Other Arab nations would follow suit.
That's why Arab regimes are panicking and have allowed the "genocide" to continue hoping Israel and America can control the situation to stabilize their precarious rule.
If one views the the middle east as only a pawn between US and Russian interests without attributing agency to the masses, they don't believe that they can be masters of their own destiny. However, the truth is the US is losing influence in the middle east on a daily basis even amongst its "allies."
SECOND: Would you say this is a corrupted group, an arm of US empire?
SHORT ANSWER: Yes of course
Another ignorant, petty Zionist line is to try to lump all Muslim groups together (e.g., Hamas is like ISIS). The same is being done in Syria. If we oppose any Sunni group we just label it as ISIS/Qaeda.
ISIS/Qaeda and their ilk are destructive fanatics who know how to destroy but cannot build a state or serve civil society. They are easily infiltrated and compromised at every level by Israel, the US and Saudi funding. And just like how Zionist in the US fund both parties for their own interests, Israel, the US and Arab states do the same in Syria. The Saudis fund both ISIS/Qaeda elements and their opponents to keep syria weak and divided.
The current group in Syria that recently took over most of Aleppo, Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has distanced itself from ISIS/Qaeda but the US designates them as a terrorist organization. They are in support of palestinian liberation but have no power to effectuate it. While all eyes were on Palestine they were able to build and prepare for fighting al assad regime in Aleppo.
It is true that no Muslim group is strong enough to oppose the intervention now. However, this is changing every single day as long as the slughter in Gaza continues.
I appreciate the long response.
It’s also interesting from an empire perspective, I think it was Michael Hudson and R Wolff, who said the US would’ve been much better off just “making nice” with Muslims in the region instead of pinning alliance to Israel.
Don’t you think that US/Israel attacks on Syria now are attempts to weaken Russia, in order to spread out efforts, away from Ukraine (which by all observances appears to be a lost cause for empire)? Or is this another extension to clear the path from opposition to the Ben Gurion canal?
There is always always a slimy agenda beneath it all.
Fr. John Sheehan of the Jesuit order
"Every time anyone says that Israel is our only friend in the Middle East, I can't help but think that, before Israel, we had no enemies in the Middle East."
________
I don't think they are mutually exclusive.
There is no doubt that Israeli bombing of Syria is to disrupt the flow of Iranian weapons and support to Hezbollah and the resistance.
Definitely Russia would prefer not to have to deal with additional efforts in Syria at a time they are dealing with US escalation in Ukraine.
As for the canal, it is always in the back of the minds of the economic interests involved. However, investors have to be convinced that it can be secured before they go all in. At this point things are too shaky.
But again that is the problem with nefarious intentions. If you live in the US and the West one is tempted to be enamored by the projection of western power. The perception is far greater than the reality. Netanyahu and company give the impression of victory when israel in reality is falling apart. Even if it takes 50 years.
The warmongers will continue to lie to the world, their constituents and to the investors.
The point is that so many regional security issues have yet to be resolved before the canal can become a viable project to begin and complete.
Define a "corrupt regime". U.S.? Israel? UK?
Control those countries and the world will finally be at peace.
No state apparatus is free of corruption. Corruption is relative to the situation. World dominance for power's sake is wrong. I don't have full knowledge to say who were good vietnamese and who were bad. However, it is a no brainer to say the US had no business there which ended up killing millions of innocent Vietnamese.
Same in the ME, whether Muslims are good or bad, and obviously it's a combination, the ones suffering are the people who just want to live in peace. Who destroys that sought after peace and stability, the US, "the west", Israel, Arab regimes and Russia.
Thank you, Ukraine for helping liberate Syria from another brutal dictator.
Glory to Ukraine.
Just read at South Front that the Kurds (SDF, YPG-YPJ) have replaced the retreating Syrian Army in the defense of Aleppo. The infos may be confusing now but it seems that the "rebels" reaching the center of the city are the good ones, the antifascist ones who are not in any real conflict, other than principles, with Damascus but are strongly opposed to Islamo-fascist forces and Turkish intervention in general.
