New Protests in Baghdad After Deadly Police Clashes

Hundreds rally for second day

After a disastrous performance in the most recent election, supporters of Iraq’s Fatah faction took to the streets Friday to protest. Police were quickly out in force, and at least one protester was killed.

Saturday, hundreds of protesters were back to the streets again, condemning the election as a fraud. Fatah did far worse in the vote than expected, and is trying to explain that with claims of fraud.

Protesters are further trying to spin this as US-brokered fraud. There’s no evidence of that, and it’s unlikely the US would orchestrate a win for Moqtada al-Sadr.

Accusations of fraud keep everyone from moving on to post-election deal-making, and risk being exploited by certain factions to fuel unrest across the country.
