With Saudi airstrikes continuing to try to slow the Houthi advance, pro-Saudi troops within Maarib are gearing up for an expected siege of the city itself, now that the area is effectively surrounded.
This is a rare admission from the Saudi side of things that the Houthis are fast approaching victory in Maarib, after weeks of daily death toll updates showing thousands of killed Houthis and little talk of territory changing hands.
All told, the Houthis took district after district, and are fast approaching the city of Maarib itself. Even with all the airstrikes, there’s not much reason to think the Houthis will be prevented from taking that city.
If the city does fall, this will be the last city in North Yemen for the Houthis to control. Groups are pushing for a ceasefire and peace talks, and this would be a strong bargaining position for them.
