Over 60 Killed in Fighting Across Central Yemen

Fighting, airstrikes reported in Maarib, Shabwa

Yemeni officials are reporting at least 67 fighters killed Monday, mostly from the Shi’ite Houthi movement, as fighting continues to rage in the country’s center. Fighting was reported in both Maarib Province and neighboring Shabwa.

The Houthis are trying to take Maarib, and sending reinforcements there, while the pro-Saudi forces are trying to retake parts of Shabwa lost in recent weeks. The fighting, particularly in Maarib, has been soaring in recent weeks.

Intense fighting on the ground has gone from something seen once or twice a week in Yemen to virtually a constant. Saudi airstrikes are being escalated as well to try to hit the Houthis.

All of this leads to a lot of casualties, but not a lot of progress on the ground, as both sides are doubling down at the first sign of trouble to avoid major losses, and never seem to win anything in a permanent way.
