ISIS Kills Several Militia Members in Weekend Syria Attacks

Attacks hit desert around Deir Ezzor region

In addition to an attack on a gas pipeline near Damascus, ISIS is increasingly carrying out attacks further east in the deserts of Deir Ezzor, attacking a number of Shi’ite militia groups and killing several.

Exact figures aren’t clear, but two members of Liwaa al-Quds were among the slain, when the vehicle they were in was targeted in the desert. Ongoing attacks were reported several places elsewhere, including five militia killed near Palmyra.

Reports from the area are that the ambushes were followed by a flurry of Russian airstrikes, as they tried to root out the Islamist fighters who’ve so long been a struggle for the Syrian government.

ISIS, for its part, has enough fighters that they seem to believe they can reestablish themselves somewhere in Syria, though so far every attempt to get out of the desert has led to a quick reversal in fortunes.
