North Korea Warns of ‘Very Grave Situation’ After Biden’s Comments

Officials see Biden continuing 'hostile policy'

President Biden has made his first policy comments toward North Korea, and North Korean officials are very pessimistic, warning that Biden shows intent to continue a hostile policy that the US has maintained for over half a century.

Their big concern was Biden referring to them as a “security threat” to the US, which North Korean officials said was a blunder and leads to a “very grave situation” between the two nations.

There had been hope of diplomatic rapprochement between the US and North Korea during the Trump Administration, but that stalled and everything is effectively back to where it started. Biden is not indicating any intentions to try to get diplomacy going again, and North Korea sees this as a return to Obama-era hostility.

In the past, North Korean suggestions of talks toward formally ending the Korean War were rebuffed by the US.  It’s not clear where Biden would stand on future talks, but officials suggested a middle ground between Trump’s diplomatic overtures and Obama’s continuation of the status quo.
