Armenia said on Friday that it is ready to work towards a ceasefire in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, where the country has been battling with Azerbaijan since Sunday.
Armenia’s foreign ministry said it “stands ready” to work with the US, France, and Russia “to re-establish a ceasefire regime.” The US, France, and Russia co-chair the Minsk Group, which was set up in 1992 by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to promote negotiations and peace talks over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Turkey has been accused of intervening in the conflict on behalf of Azerbaijan. On Friday, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he has evidence of Turkish support. “We have proof,” Pashinyan said. “They are using drones and Turkish F-16 to bomb civilian areas in Nagorno Karabakh.”
Pashinyan also accused Turkey of “once again advancing on a genocidal path,” referencing the Armenian genocide carried out by the Ottoman’s in the early 20th century.
“The situation is much more serious,” Pashinyan said when asked how the current fighting compares to clashes that broke out in 2016. “It would be more appropriate to compare it with what happened in 1915, when more than 1.5 million Armenians were slaughtered during the first genocide of the 20th century.”
Turkey has also been accused of sending fighters from northern Syria to fight in Nagorno-Karabakh. French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that he has information that indicates Syrian fighters have traveled to Nagorno-Karabakh through Turkey.
The fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh entered its sixth day on Friday. Nearly 200 people have been confirmed killed, including 30 civilians.
Azerbaijan is taking Her Land back, which is illegally occupied by Armenia. PERIOD.
Why dont they trade? Each has the other’s land.
I am not aware of Azerbaijan holding any Armenian land. Nagorno-Karabakh us a self-proclaimed republic NOT RECOGNIZED by Armenia. In addition to Armenian populated NK, it is also holding seven regions populated by Azeris, from where many fled. In addition, Azerbaijan has an exclave bordering Turkey, Iran and a stretch of Armenia — not having link to Azerbaijan.
In addition. Armenia has since 2018 street actions and the election of pro-US prime minister, steadily soured its relations with Russia (closures of Russian TV, etc.)
Armenia is counting on US and France getting back into mediation, to marginalize Russia. But this could work only if Azerbaijan plays along.
Azerbaijan has no reason to stop especially as popular sentiment is to against fighting for another cease fire, and no solution. Turkey is promising to support it — thus even more encouraged.
Jerevan has been used to holding on to its advantages, and often starting short skirmishes. This time — it has gambled away Russia’s good faith.
Remains to be seen how will things start looking from Nikol Pashinyan’s perspective, now that major building have bern hit in NK capital and electricity is periodically out,
Up until now — Armenia and Azerbaijan have not traded fire, There were drone overflights, no military action against each others territory.
Temptation is for Armenia to come to defend NK, and be the first one to start the war against Azerbaijan.
It has not come to that yet.
The Azeri Turks were a political movement used by the Bolsheviks to revolt against the Romanov family.
As a sign of a political gesture to the Ottoman Empire, the Bolsheviks gifted, historically lands that belong to Armenians, to the Azeris with their own autonomous region to sway Ankara to their side and a thank you to the Azeri movement for helping out with the revolution.
That said, Armenians are naive to believe breaking bread with turks is the solution. If the first genocide wasn’t a lesson, perhaps the world can witness a second one in Nagoro as this continues. Like the Klingons in Star Trek, you must demonstrate hardcore brutality to earn their respect.
If only it were all this simple. I can easily rattle off many historic facts of the same period that would nit make many nations proud.
History has nothing to do with this, nor religion, nor ethnicity.
It all started after the election in Armenia, and the new circle of government leaning increasingly towards Washington.
And this started the chain of events that Yerevan cannot control. Azerbaijan started buying US weapons and Israeli drones in addition to Russian weapons. Region is destabilized. Iran and Turkey could only watch the process that was bringing US and Israel in the region.
Yerevan governing elite has a difficult decision to make. Geopolitical games are under way, and people are dying.
It is tiresome to listen to the simplistic tales of history and morality. While some ambitious heads craving power started something that cannot in the end be controlled.
Bianca, The Armenian “enclave” didn’t pop up over night in that region and have a longer history than any Azeri Turk. If any blame to go around it goes straight to Russia and Russia as usual is playing political chess game while people are dying. Why now? This is about pipeline since a pipeline directly through Nagorno will lower cost of delivering oil.
Nagorno also plays a strategic spot for Israel since it shares even closer boarder with Iran and they would love to have a nice operational base much like Iran has in Lebanon.
Of course not. It is a long history. But keep in mind that Armenia did not recognize independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. The history surely goes further back then the discovery of the “new world”, and the extermination of Native Americans practically a modern history.
And surely, it is Russian fault — we may as well rehearse this line , I saw it coming.
Nagorno-Karabakh was safe for a ling time thanks to Russia and the Russian people sympathy for Armenians. But since 2018 — the caring has been very much one sided. Russia was to continue to guarantee Armenian safety — while the newly elected government decided to cast eye across Atlantic, urged on by Armenian diaspora. This entailed unfriendly moves such as banning Russian schools or Russian TV stations.
Russia is not lacking pipelines, and it is unlikely Azerbaijan is interested either. These are the stories locals tell to speculate.
The change in Yerevan politics is the cause of destabilization. Yerevan may want to involve US and France into mediating.
But neither of them can alter the security situation in the ground.
Only Russia , Turkey and Iran can.
It is entirely up to Yerevan if it wants Russia’s help. I sense it will be hard to ask for help after poking the bear in the eye for two years.
But needs must.
Illegal under who?
Under UNO’s Resolution.
These acts of aggression by Azerbaijan are what the ICC calls the Supreme International Crime. These are war crimes but again the guilty will not be held to account. The rules based order that they now refer to is lawlessness……………We live in lawless times. World War is the only possible outcome.
azeribijian is a fake nation that perviously was part of Persia—they ethnically cleansed Armenians in their sliver nachos-burritostan and celebrated deaths in Armenia due to an earthquake in 1988…when the turkis barbarians leave Syria, Libya, Cyprus (18% turkeys) then they may have the moral authority to complain about why the world condemns their Armenian genocide
Azeris, turkis, like amerikans require jihadi proxies to fight their wars—they cannot defeat artahsk soldiers
unfortunately Pashinyan has played a double game, alienating Russia–only if Armenia is directly attacked will Russian trigger their self defense pact
