In comments before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared the “tide is turning” in favor of the US and against China, saying he sees more international support for US policies on China in recent days.
Pompeo has been making near daily diatribes against China worldwide, calling on a global alliance against Chinese “tyranny.” Today’s comments suggest he is getting at least some interest in this idea, and his new Cold War.
At the same time, Pompeo said he was dismayed that more nations aren’t taking a hard line on China on the Hong Kong security law, declaring China the “central threat of our times.”
Most nations don’t seem to stand to gain much from choosing sides in the US-China hostility, which is likely to just keep sparking trade wars and mutual condemnations, and stands to impact a lot of nations’ investment in 5g technology, as Pompeo orders them not to buy Chinese.
He’s not getting any support, except by bootlicker nations trying to gain some temporary advantage, grifting off the empire one last time. Man, how can we be rid of this administration?
“Man, how can we be rid of this administration?”
Good news: Donald Trump is most likely going to lose in November. Bad news: Joe Biden is most likely going to win.
That’s what I keep thinking. I can’t wait until election day until I think about the day after election day and depression sets in.
I’m sitting this one out, just like I did the last one. Don’t believe in choosing between two pathetic candidates.
Vote third party.
Vote third party is like refusing to vote you are telling the country something .
What does that even mean?
Yeah I am not at all excited to see foot-in-mouth Joe and the neocons he’s going to bring in; but I can’t be more excited to see the backside of Pompous and the rest of the current crew.
Are you seriously thinking Biden administration would be any better?
Will they manage to coax Trump into a war somewhere — so they can happily expand it later? Making it “Trump” war.
With all the technology at our fingertips we still rely in two fossilized parties to produce good candidates?
Better in some ways, worse in others. Better for climate change perhaps. Better internally generally, especially depending on who leads his various departments, as he himself is approaching senility.
But internationally, pretty horrible, I agree. Rice and Flournoy would be an amazingly bad combo.
33 percent drop in second-quarter GDP and we are winning against China. The fat boy is delusional.
China producing all-time record steel and aluminum output despite Covid and all attempts by the US to harm their economy. Huawei passes Samsung to be the largest cell phone producer. This may be one time where the BS and propaganda doesn’t work, except in 5-eyes countries perhaps.
“One of the many great things about our just signed giant Trade Deal with China is that it will bring both the USA & China closer together in so many other ways. Terrific working with President Xi, a man who truly loves his country. Much more to come!”
This is a January 22nd tweet by Trump. And 6 months later China is enemy number one(“central threat of our times”).
Great minds think alike, at the same moment in the AM. 🙂
As you conveniently forget the China virus and it’s ongoing swath of death and destruction worldwide.
“We see the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for what it is: the central threat of our times,” Pompeo said.
So the virus is the reason we have a problem with “Chinese aggression”? No virus, no enmity?
Before the virus “great” trade deal,
after the virus (150K American fatalities) cold war.
So the virus made Chinese communist party “the central threat of our times”? Do you willfully just ignore what is written? Pompeo didn’t even mention the virus.
The virus ended attempts to find a mutually beneficial path forward.
It destroyed the US and world economies,
killed hundreds of thousands
and to this day China refuses to allow an international investigation.
Pretending otherwise is classic Chamberlain-ism.
Not true. There is an international team for a while looking at virus genesis in China. It is understandable no self-respecting international expert would want Pompeo types anywhere near such work.
In China — quarantine of all infected was implemented. No Western countries, US included wanted to BEAR THE COSTS IF QUARANTINE. Thus, they dealt with epidemic in 4 months — with 4,600 dead in 1.5 billion population.
In US and many other our imitators — infected are roaming free — happily spreading the disease to their family and friends.
Deal with it!
Unfortunately— all this will do is bring Biden and his globalists to power. We cannot win.
China controls the WHO,
and prevents any objective investigation.
They will never be trusted, hence a new Cold War.
That is rather hasty! We just puck up our toys and go home!
We are juvenile.
We chose how to deal with epidemic — and we blew it. Now, we are blaming China for our failure.
How about first implementing PROPER measures for managing epidemic — then talk.
It is not WHO that ordered us how to manage the contagion. We did it. Not just the President — we all are guilty of not protesting vigorously against improvisations that Dr.Fauci and the rest have hoisted upon us.
We all like sheep accepted nation-wide shutdown, while allowing free travel and infected people to “self-isolate”. We did not bother to learn ABC of epidemic containment and were too happy to indulge into mask “controversy” and other juvenalia.
Sweden had the best policy.
But creating it and knowingly spreading it is on the Chinese.
“Sweden had the best policy”
Best policy for what? COVID-19? If so this comment is as laughable as all your other comments. Sweden (568) has a higher death rate per million pop. than the United States (472). When compared with other Scandinavian countries it’s been an absolute disaster. Denmark – 106; Finland – 59; Norway – 47; Iceland – 29. And compared to China (3 per mill.pop.) Sweden has been an absolute f***ing disaster.
china should not be required to warn us about such a trivial virus with a death rate of only 3 people per million . the common cold has a high death rate than that .
So you’re saying there will only be a total of less than a thousand US deaths in the US from COVID-19?
Yes China , South Korea and under developed countries that allow over the counter access to hydroxychloroquine have no problem with covid killing many people . The high death rate in the USA and most of the Western developed world is a direct result of false advice passed out by our news media ,Health agencies that for some reason or another want our countries to remain in a panic situation . Dr Zelenko from N.Y and now Dr Gold and her front line doctors clearly laid out the path America should have followed but have been silenced over and over again and again by the establishment . I would not be surprised if this little comment is taken off the internet . Glen Beck said it best they lied and people died .
Your supposed death rate of 3 people per million translates to fewer than a thousand people dying in the US.
Are you asserting that fewer than a thousand people have died of COVID-19 in the US, or not? It’s not a complicated question.
I’am saying the high death rate in the USA which is over 150,000 already could have been much lower without the establishment and the news media forbidding zinc and hydroxychloroquine .. African Nigerian witch doctors have a much lower death rate than the highest priced health care in the world. I don’t know the reason for this . Do you ? Is it to make more money ? or is it to get rid of Trump .
My perception is that the American establishment response to hydroxychloroquine is based in political hysteria — if Trump is for it, they’re against it. I doubt it’s as calculated as you imply.
I’m glad there are work-arounds to the war on hydroxychloroquine (I’m prophylactically taking zinc along with supplements that contain similar quinine-base compounds to hydroxychloroquine, the function of which seems to be allowing cells to absorb and hold the zinc).
Thank you Thomas Please inform me of the quinine work arounds . Apparantly most Americans don’t know about these work arounds ” You doubt it is as calculated as I imply ” . So you don’t believe the DOJ , FBI , CIA , all worked together to remove our president . You think it is Ok for the WHO NHI the FDA all to work together to ban a particular treatment because Trump is for it .It looks to me we have to powerful of a establishment .When doctors can be threatened by the establishment for political reasons .
Tonic water contains small amounts of quinine. With a little looking around, you can find quinine teas and powders on the Internet. The mechanism of action SEEMS to be that quinine makes it easier for cells in your lungs to absorb zinc, and that zinc is helpful versus Sars-Cov-2 jin that respect just like it is versus “the common cold.”
I’m not sure why you’d assume me thinking that X is not as calculated as you imply would mean that I think Y was not calculated, or that I think anything is “OK.”
According to your claim of 3 deaths per million people, South Korea should have only experienced 153 deaths. Its regime admits to twice as many.
SO S Korea has 6 deaths per million At one time China claimed 4500 deaths for one and 1/2 billion people which might be about 3 per million . I should have never mentioned a certain number to you . seen as how you are such a stickler for numbers .. Although I’am happy you are that way . It is the only way you can pass judgements reliably .
So South Korea has twice the level you assert, IF we are to 1) believe their numbers, AND 2) apply those numbers to entire populations instead of to the actually infected. Granted, I do find South Korea’s numbers a LITTLE more credible than the US claims (which are probably somewhat over-blown) and a LOT more credible than the Chinese claims (which are probably fairly low-balled), but I’m not sure any regime is being completely honest.
From what I can tell, COVID-19 isn’t nearly deadly enough to justify the authoritarian steps taken as supposed counter-measures. But I suspect its fatality rate is a good deal higher than you’re pretending.
And thinking that the Swedish economy has sailed unaffected through the COVID-19 storm is just as laughable as all the other propaganda you’ve written here. The New York Times disagrees with you.
I know the NYT is pure propaganda when it comes to Russia, China and the other countries where Washington desires regime change but I haven’t read about Washington wanting regime change in Stockholm in quite a few years so the article is probably fairly accurate.
BTW. if you want to be a good black propagandist, you need to be truthful with almost all of your claims so you build up the reader’s confidence in what you are saying and then a throw in one or two credible lies. Laughably, you seem to think the reverse will work.
The NYT as an authority, LOL!
Here are the latest figures for Sweden:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/sweden/
Sure. I guess we were on the verge of convincing China to renounce communism but then came the virus and no more “beneficial path forward”.
The attempt at improved cooperation,
came to a halt with the deliberate unleashing of the virus
on the US and the world.
It’s really quite obvious.
I guess if you say they deliberately unleashed the virus enough times, you will eventually believe it.
Whateve’s wars:
https://nypost.com/2020/07/30/most-americans-blame-china-for-global-spread-of-covid-19-survey/
Wow, I’m convinced. A survey shows Americans, that have been propagandized for months, believe China is responsible for unleashing the virus. If that isn’t proof, what is?
It’s not an attempt to “convince” you,
it’s just an illustration of how far you are out in Left field.
So it was a compliment. Thank you.
You are welcome, enjoy watching the grass grow.
I will. And when it dries, I will enjoy smoking it.
I have always suspected that, lol.
Again, thank you for the compliment. By the way, try some, it might make you less of a red neck.
I was a kid in the 60’s been there, it helps me understand your derangement.
My derangement? That is hilarious coming from a man, or woman, who said he/she respected John Bolton. Start smoking again!.
I told you then that Trump hired Bolton to play Bad Cop in his negotiations.
And for that role he was respected and feared.
Trump always had a leash on him, but when he went rogue got fired.
No, you said you respected Bolton and you repeated it when I called you on it. Same with Nikki Haley. Don’t backtrack.
I explained Trump use of Bolton, the BAD COP. He was perfect for the roll, he just F’ed up thinking he really was supposed to be a player.
You and I both know you are lying. You said you respected both Bolton and Nikki Haley. Why don’t you just man up and admit it?
And before virus — China was not Communist? Or did Trump and Pompeo just discover it?
China was always Communist,
but the hope (remote admittedly)
was for TRADE to bring them around to living in a civilized world.
And here is where we disagree. China is a civilization, older then ours. They do not have to be like us — and we are arrogant to think that they must. In Russia they just passed constitutional amendments and marriage is declared to be union between man and woman. Are we civilized and they uncivilized as we clearly do not agree on such matters?
Is China uncivilized because it has implemented capitalism in such a manner as to treat equally public and private capital, and as a result have VERY low to non-existent taxes? How is it uncivilized?
China’s totalitarian persecution of the Uighurs, Christians, Hong Kongers,
Mongolians, Tibetans and Taiwanese removes them from the definition of a MODERN civilized nation.
And we have eliminated over 20 million human beings since WW2. We were/are bombing 7 Muslim countries at the SAME time. We sanction people into starvation. If China isn’t the definition of a modern civilized nation what on earth does that make us?
Is the US treating anybody like the Chinese treat the Uighurs?
No.
You mean killing(bombing)Muslims simultaneously in 7 different countries and sanctioning them to death in those same countries, and others we aren’t presently bombing, isn’t worse?
“Muslims” jihados picked a fight with us, it’s a war.
Nothing like concentration camps for Yighurs,
the unprovoked takeover of Hong Kong,
the lying to the WHO about the virus NOT being contagious,
the brutal murder of Indian border troops,
oppression against Tibet and Mongolia or
the slave labor to fat-fund Apple, Nike and Walmart.
You dismiss our killing of hundreds of thousands of Muslims(500,000 by sanctions alone)since just 1991 as “jihados picked a fight with us, it’s war”. And then you rattle off what bad China has done in comparison which is mere child’s play if you can do math. You didn’t even mention the killing sanctions we have on several countries but you did tell me the Chinese brutally killed Indian border troops and they use slave labor(that was funny).
The aggressor sets the rules, 911, set the rules.
Of the major powers only China runs concentration camps and slaves.
They are all yours.
“Of the major powers only China runs concentration camps and slaves”
The US is no longer a major power? That’s a pretty bold claim.
Seriously? 9/11 is why we killed 500,000 Iraqis, mostly woman and children, before 9/11 even happened? Or how about since 9/11. Iraq again? Syria? Libya? Sanctions? None had anything to do with 9/11. Do some math for fu*cks sake.. And I’m not condoning anything China does, but it pales, by comparison, to what we do or have done. Our hypocrisy, which you buy into, is limitless.
You always “condone” China and everyone else except the US.
Assuming you’re an American citizen, you should always care more about the misdeeds of your own country than any other. After all, you’re paying for these actions and they are being done theoretically in your name. Unless they affect us somehow, China’s actions should be of interest primarily to Chinese people.
MLK called the US the greatest purveyor of violence in the world. It was true then as we were in Vietnam and has been amply proven to be true since.
I’m very critical of US foreign policies,
yet recognize that even with numerous and catastrophic flaws it is still the best place to try to effect improvement in the human condition.
Whereas you just won’t admit that we are a killing machine that has offed at least 20 million people since WW2. If you can find another country that can approach those numbers let me know. And if you can find where I once condoned “everyone else”, also let me know. I can’t help it if my comparisons with other countries makes us look like the rampaging rogue state that we are.
You always dredge up your version of history. It’s your technique for avoiding the issues at hand.
TODAY, China is behaving worse than any other significant country in the world.
(And yes they killed as many people in the past as the US, Russia, Germany or the UK, depending how far back you care to read)
My version of history? I didn’t make up those numbers. And it was completely relevant to what we were talking about. If you’d like, I will only go back in history to the time I was born, 1955. We don’t even get to count Korea and we still dwarf the rest of the world in how many lives we have snuffed out since then. And the numbers don’t even include the numbers of unknown since the deaths caused by our sanctions are so far reaching, it’s impossible to know. Those issues will always be at hand until we change our behavior. Until then, we will outdo China in bad behavior.
More history.
Was Russia’s, China’s, Germany’s Japan’s, France’s or the UK’s HISTORY any better?
TALK about what we can change now, in the present.
Your constant dodge to the past (no worse than any other major power)
outs you as just another cross-eyed, snit-fit, one trick pony.
I am talking about the PRESENT. End our sanctions on half the world. Eliminate our 800 to 1000 bases we have spread over the planet. Stop policing the god damned world. What planet do you live on to be so effing blind?
China is absolutely civilized.
Whether civilization (“centralization, the domestication of both humans and other organisms, specialization of labour, culturally ingrained ideologies of progress and supremacism, monumental architecture, taxation, societal dependence upon farming and expansionism”) is necessarily a great thing is a different matter.
We did mostly agree with Russia that marriage was between a man and a women But Obama and the judges declared it discrimination . So we could be more civilized .
Good for Obama and the judges.
The Kansas Flu (mistakenly called the Spanish flu in the US) killed 50 million worldwide a hundred years ago. I guess the US should have been excommunicated by all, right?
Doesn’t matter where diseases start, it matters how you deal with them. We’ve been pretty crap at it.
China created it, and then out sourced it to the world.
To deny that is to deny reality.
You are blind to the reality. This will not help Trump. The erratic and unreliable big power is a threat to the globe. This is harming US interests.
As for epidemic — we just gave up on it. Unacceptable!
China is unacceptable as the world’s only superpower,
the US will not capitulate to it.
Agree. China does not want to nor does it have the objective means to become one.
Trump was against the Empire — now he is a leading proponent of one! No need for US to capitulate — just to recognize that it DOES NOT want to be an empire.
It will not be too hard to find the consensus around the globe on security for ALL and market economy.
We must stop telling people how to think and live. None of our business. The world is not IKEA of uniform, interchangeable parts.
Gordon Chang, an expert on China,
describing China’s political leadership as pursuing a geopolitical
ambition of “world domination.” The country’s leadership, he added,
views China as “the only sovereign state in the world.”
That sounds like a threat to me.
He continued: “People have been discussing Xi Jinping’s
theory of international relations as replacing the Western theories of
international relations for the last 300 years. Well, if you subtract
300 years from today, you get to the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648 that
establishes the international order that we see today of sovereign
states competing with one another. When China says that they want to
replace that system, it means they want to go back to their imperial
system of where they governed all under heaven. This is breathtaking.
This is ludicrous, but, nonetheless, this is the way Chinese are talking
these days, and we’ve got to understand the nature of the challenge –
not just to the U.S., not just to our friends and allies, but to the
whole concept of the world as we see it today.”
LOL the US is a paper tiger, and will lose its status as having the reserve currency since it has weaponized it at every turn via illegal extrajudicial sanctions on just about everyone. Face it, the US is a terrorist state that resembles other state terror actors from the 30’s and 40’s who also terrorized their neighbors.
What would China have to gain economically if it released Covid-19 on purpose?? Nothing but pain, and isolation. It is just pure unsubstantiated bunk that China released this. I would not be surprised if a US lab abroad did this especially since the US is in search of enemy’s abroad in order to sustain it’s military budget., and further deplete US citizens rights at home.
When the virus broke out,
China immediately LOCKED DOWN Wuhan,
as in preventing travel in and out of that province.
EXCEPT for travelers going out internationally.
They contained the threat to themselves,
but allowed (some say facilitated) it to spread worldwide.
Just facts Jace.
Your facts have a certain problem: the “travelers going out internationally” were the CITIZENS of those nations coming back home! It was up to those nations to QUARANTINE their citizens for two weeks to make sure they don’t spread disease. Very simple, if you have a modicum of intelligence …
China had certified the the WHO that there was in fact no human to human transmission, which was a lie, the the WHO repeated on cue.
Further, all of those leaving Wuhan were not just citizens of other countries.
Trump in fact did ban incoming travelers from China and Europe only did well after the fact.
But your allegiance to China and endorsement for spreading a worldwide pandemic is duly noted.
Utter fake news: by February (before things got going in the US), person to person transmission had been noted for a long time already.
Also, it is noted that you admit that Trump had banned travelers from China, other than returning citizens. You understand? It was our utter cluelessness in quarantining and tracking travelers and the unhealthy that got it going in the US.
Lastly, it is now also established through DNA tracking of the viral strands, that OUR problem came from Europe, not China.
Face it: Trump had MONTHS of heads up and messed it all up, pretending there was nothing to worry about. After stuff hit the fan, the plan has been to blame China. You’re playing your part in the plan.
“Our problem came from Europe”, LOL, which came from China.
Now tell me this woman is fake.
https://nypost.com/2020/07/10/chinese-virologist-flees-after-accusing-beijing-of-covid-19-cover-up/
Wow! An escaped scientist. OMG!
Google “Curveball” re Iraq and also the “Kuwait incubator babies” … curious things happen when powerful people want to gin up a conflict or war.
As for this lady’s news, it may even be true; beauracracies are notoriously slow and conservative; but the US CDC already warned of person to person transmission on Jan 31, when we had a handful of cases. This was known. And our system still flopped like a trout on mud.
Sure.
https://www.nationalreview.com/the-morning-jolt/chinas-devastating-lies/
Sad thing is, that most of the American people have such short time horizons, that they will conveniently ignore the inconsistency.
Last year, the US was the top buyer of Chinese goods, by far. Apparently that’s still true. “Even with the ongoing trade war since 2018, the U.S. remains China’s top destination for exports.”
https://howmuch.net/articles/chinas-exports-imports-trade-balance
As usual the US talks big but doesn’t put its money where its mouth is. Tell the American people they can’t have any new cell phones unless they are made in the United States, just see how that goes over. China’s behavior has changed little, yet US leaders have converted them from responsible partner to global pariah on Trump’s whim. It used to be said we would make China better through trade, now our govt seems determined to make China worse through pointless hostility. This time, it will work.
True. But it’s not our business to make other countries look just like us. We should try learning from older civilizations instead.
Way too many Americans believe it is our business, but of course they’re wrong. We certainly do have a lot to learn from China, especially a little bit of humility, the prerequisite to learning anything else.
Australia went along with the US demands till it realised that the price was too much. Pompeo was told where he could get off at the end of his quick visit to that country.
Tide is turning said King Canute
Soon the US will have sanctioned itself into a corner of its own
With one or two co-dependent, abused poodles for company.
Pompeo is just a fat “Bolton snake oil salesman who cares nothing about the American people, our well being, or safety. China is NOT the problem..sure they could be a model democracy, but WE are not even close to being a model democracy. The US needs an enemy at every turn in order to keep screwing the American people out of healthcare, jobs, and a decent life. The only winner’s are the donor class and the military industrial complex.
Whatever Pompeo says….just reverse it to get the truth…!
The power of propoganda. Pompeo is using it to the max to manufacture something out of nothing. And it’s working.
