Pompeo: Every Nation Must Act After Iran Successfully Launches Satellite

Iran's first military satellite successfully in orbit

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed on Wednesday that for the first time ever, they have successfully put a military satellite, the Noor, into orbit. This came after several failed launches in recent years.

The US is objecting, of course. The US views all space launches as a violation of a UN Security Council ban on making nuclear weapons, on the grounds that it’s a rocket and therefore might have some technology applicable to weapons.

To that end, Secretary of Stated Mike Pompeo is demanding that every nation take the Iranian launch to the UN to evaluate the launch with respect to UN bans on missiles. He says Iran must be held accountable after the launch, suggesting his “evaluation” is already done.

Though the US has always treated the UN resolutions as such, it is not obvious that they are meant to forbid Iran from putting objects into orbit, nor indeed if the UN could even theoretically forbid Iran from accessing space.
