Taliban, Afghan Govt Set to Release More Prisoners

Taliban confirmed successful release of first prisoners

Two rounds of prisoner releases by the Afghan government have come and gone, and the Taliban has confirmed that the first 100 were released successfully. The Afghan government says 300 were released overall so far.

This is a far reach from 5,000 Taliban and 1,000 government forces, but it’s a start. The Afghan government also says they are going to release another 100 prisoners soon, hoping to get 1,500 overall released in this round.

The Taliban has confirmed they will follow suit, with at least 20 to be released in their first move, and more to come if things continue to go well. After weeks of delays, things seem to be going well indeed.

Interestingly, it was only after the Taliban gave up on prisoner release talks that the first releases took place. Now that they are occurring, both sides seem much more optimistic, and willing to take chances to get the releases ahead.
