Afghan Policeman Kills at Least Two Comrades in Kandahar

Attacker had just recently joined force, killed sleeping coworkers

An Afghan provincial policeman in the Kandahar Provinc attacked and killed two other police, injuring three others, in an attack at his checkpoint. Officials say the attacker was a recent recruit, and attacked the others as they slept.

Details are scant about the identity of the attacker, though Kandahar is a major Taliban base of operations, and there have been a growing number of insider attacks against Afghan forces, especially the police.

Two killed and three wounded is the official report right now, for the overnight attack. Other sources, however, were quoted in the media as saying that the attack actually killed five police and injured seven others.

Notably, there has been no comment from any militant group on the attack, which is unusual. Officials also provided no indication that they had any specific clues about what happened to the attacker, though generally speaking such attacks see a gunmen killing everyone else at the checkpoint and stealing everything that isn’t nailed down.
