Officials with the US State Department have repeatedly talked of “non-diplomatic options” recently in Syria. Though they’re trying to be coy, what they’re really talking about is overt military action against the Syrian government, attacks which would threaten Russian forces embedded with them, and likely drag Russia into a shooting war with the US.
Russia’s Defense Ministry was quick to urge caution today, noting that they’d recently deployed air defense systems into Syria specifically to counter the threat of US attack, and that the US should “carefully” consider the potential consequences of launching such strikes.
The State Department acknowledged they were aware of the Russian warning, but insisted that internal discussion within the US government continues on the “non-diplomatic” options, which is to say, starting a war with Russia. Spokesman John Kirby added there would be no discussion with Russia over the matter.
Kirby added that the US was not “giving up” on Aleppo, and was continuing to discuss options to prevent the Syrian government from capturing the remainder of the city, which is held by al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front. This appears to be fueling much of the rhetoric on Russia.

So, that is it! We have come a full circle since 9-11. From waging a war against Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, to standing up for Al-Qaeda in Aleppo! And risking nuclear war to do it.
But it all may be academic. All sorts of groups that were imbedded with Al-Nusra are defecting to Turkey. First to defect when Turkey entered were Turkmen, then came a number of Free Syrian Army groups, and now Al-Nusra associated groups. One of those that defected to Turkey has been attacked by ISIS — our newest allies in Syria! A number of these rebels have been killed. Turkey is there to open up a corridor to allow both civilians and all militants to leave, provided that the militants will serve under Turkey as they move on ISIS. But it looks like now, East Aleppo in few days may be empty, and the question moot. Turkey has cleared about 400 sq km to be safe area for civilians. The attempt to bomb these defectors today was a warning to the population not to try to flee. How far will we go to keep the siege of Aleppo going? Well, if Turkey succeeds in getting civilians safely out, then militants can chose their fate. They can commiserate with the White Helmets.

No, the Russian warning was not just “consequences’. The Russian generals explicitly said that any attack on Syrian or Russian assets – or any attack that they couldn’t confirm was NOT directed at Syrian or Russian assets – would be destroyed.
They also explicitly said that their anti-aircraft radars cover the entire area, and that anyone who believes in “invisible jets” would be in for a surprise. This was a warning not only against use of “stealth” aircraft, but a warning against US considered “covert use” of long-range weapons like cruise missiles.
Russia has drawn a line in the sand – cross it and they’re going to war.
I would expect them to be cautious in this: i.e., if there is an engagement of any kind, they will go to the UN Security Council to get a Resolution supporting their position immediately after. They will probably go to the UNSC early in fact to get a Resolution explicitly prohibiting such US tactics.
But make no mistake: Russian intends East Aleppo to be taken and that will put paid to the partition of Syria and also to Turkey’s taking Aleppo as part of their “safe zone”.
