Turkey and Russia continue to step up the rhetoric today after Turkish warplanes destroyed a Russian bomber over northern Syria yesterday morning, with Turkish officials continuing to insist they had every right to destroy the plane.
In comments today, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insisted the plane was destroyed defending “the rights of our brothers in Syria,” and insisted that Turkish policy toward planes along the Syria-Turkish border would not change, despite Russian anger.
Oddly, Erdogan conceded that a “short-term border violation can never be a pretext for an attack,” but followed this up by reiterating that they are going to view planes in northern Syria “as a military threat and treated as a military target.”
Russian officials say they believe the attack, which came after weeks of Turkish threats to attack a Russian plane, was not a coincidental incident, but rather a “planned provocation,” warning the attack further NATO-Russia relations.
Russian officials have bulked up air defenses in northern Syria since the attack, and are intending to give future bombers an escort of fighters to dissuade Turkey from getting into any more battles with them in the skies over Syria.
What so now it's not about defending Turkish airspace anymore? Is there any proof that Russia has been targeting these Turkmen or is Erdogan lying as usual?
Jason Ditz seems to think so ("Russia pounds al-Qaeda sites …").
The Russians are taking out the radicals backed by Turkey. Turkey is just trying to destroy the Assad government. The Turks, Saudi's Qatar, the US and Israel are pushing us into a world war.
Erdogan must be being put up to this by his NATO higher ups. It's madness on his part.
Classic American racism. The Untermenschen couldn't possibly think this out for themselves!
Erdogan needs his head examined. Turkey has been shipping US /UK weapons to the Turkmen who in turn has been shooting down Russian aircraft the least he should expect is that Russia will grind them into dust
How many Russian aircraft have been shot down? I can't recall any.
The Turkmen are allied with AQ
they re Terrorists and I hope Russia bombs them to the Stone age
What could Turkey do about it
"What could Turkey do about it"
Possibly more than you think. The Turks and the Russians have been fighitng on and off for 500 years and the Turks don't always lose. In fact, the last time they went to open war — in World War One — Turkey ended up getting back territory in the Brest-Litovsk ceasefire agreement that it had lost to Russia in the 1870s.
Consider the similiarity of that situation with today's: Back then, Turkey had the backing of the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary); today it has the backing of NATO.
The WW1 Russia was at its weakest position since the Mongol invasion.
But yes, they have been fighting each other for centuries.
More to the point, what chance has Putin (or anybody else) of "bombing the Turkmen [or anyone else] into the Stone Age"? The lesson of history is that state parties always lose guerilla wars. I'm old enough to remember that the Viet Cong were going to be bombed into the Stone Age too!
Erdogan proved his critics right. He acted just like another reckless thug. He was shortsighted when he started the Syria conflict and now he may start a Russia vs NATO war. Hope he doesn’t succeed. Pray for peace.
Russia may end up with a nice pipeline from Iran, through Kurdistan to Latakia. They should also retake the Assad family property that Turkey illegally annexed. Russia may be moving nuclear armed satellites to the ME.
As can be seen from the Reuters article on this website, Russia has no intention of making war on Turkey. English translation: Putin is capitulating. The French TV station TF1 claimed yesterday that the Russian ambassaodr to France said Russia wants to be part of a coalition of countries and included Turkey in that list. If that's true, Putin isn't just capitulating, he's grovelling! Other than strutting up and down bluffing and blustering, therefore, he'll do nothing. How such a massive humiliation will play out with his elderly Soviet-generation supporters back home remains to be seen, particularly combined with recent disasters in Ukraine, which ultimately is the centrepiece of all this.

Erdogan convicts himself by his own words. He is on the side of the terrorists.
There will be rumors of wars but mostly just lots of weapons being sold to every side. Politics mean nothing. ALL human activity has always been financed by the same Intl. Central Banking system. ALL conflicts…ALLsides of every conflict.
This one has 2 outliers…Iran&Syria are not in system yet. But they are being driven into debt over all this.
I think we are overlooking the direct implication of What Erdogan is reported to have said. ((defending the rights of his brothers in Syria)) The immediate question, Why are his brothers (the Turkmen I presume) in Syria attacking a legally constituted democracy?.
