Following confirmation by the French military that they definitely weren’t in the process of invading Somalia, the United States military is now confirming that it is, in fact, American forces that are pouring into the southern portion of the country in a helicopter-backed invasion.
US military officials confirmed to the Associated Press today that forces from the US Joint Special Operations Command had invaded the lawless African nation, and were the ones responsible for the attack on the tiny village near Barawa this morning that was the first staging ground of the attack.
What the officials wouldn’t comment on was exactly why the United States, which launched a failed “peacekeeping” operation in the nation in 1993 and backed an Ethiopian invasion in 2007, had decided to launch yet another foreign adventure, though media outlets speculated that it was probably something to do with al-Qaeda.
The United States has recently been supplying the self-described Somali “government” with “tons of arms,” according to the State Department. Yet reports on the ground suggest that forces loyal to this faction, which only controls a handful of city blocks in the capital city of Mogadishu, have generally just sold the US-supplied weapons on the open market.
Though without any concrete information about what the American military actually intends to do in Somalia it will be difficult to speculate about the size and scope of the invasion, with roughly 200,000 soldiers committed to Iraq and Afghanistan (and more escalations on the way in the later) it seems hard to imagine the nation is looking to commit to yet another long-term occupation.
Ehh. Invade another country- whatever. The fact that this is so not even news or even controversial tells us many things about the state of this country. Does the military even need Obama's approval for this sort of thing anymore? Forget about Congress. Congress is a powerless joke when it comes to the real stuff. They exist merely to divide up the plunder among connected elites.
Oh- and it is about "Al Qaeda"- sorta. LOL. That is all they have to do to justify any invasion of a Moooslim country- just say "Al Qaeda" (which is a purposefully murky and undefined entity so loosely defined that anyone who is critical of US policy can be made a member of it). Our useless corporate press won't challenge this lie.
And of course – the rest of us "Americans" could care less.
The day will come when all these military and intelligence people – tasked with doing evil stuff overseas will come home and they will be looking for work and they won't be looking in the help wanted ads. You reap what you sow.
"The day will come when all these military and intelligence people – tasked with doing evil stuff overseas will come home and they will be looking for work and they won't be looking in the help wanted ads. You reap what you sow."
They provide just the sort of personnel needed to staff a secret police infrastructure, as well as the uniformed police needed for ordinary, run-of-the-mill oppression.
The fact that this operation is being carried out by the Joint Special Operations Command points not to any sort of occupation, rather to a kill operation. The special operations forces are too expensive to waste in occupational duties, and they would revolt in any case if they were tasked with anything remotely smelling of garrison duty.
his whole article is almost humorously negligent of objectivity. US attacks Somalia? Invasion? The US carried out planned attacks on Al Qaeda operatives and leaders. To try to frame this story as an attack on the Somalian people and as an invasion is not just shady reporting, it's illogical. Seriously. The US wants to occupy Somalia? Not even under a Machiavellian guise does that begin to make sense. There is no rationale for occupying Somalia. They have no desirable resources. This one article completely destroys this website's credibility in that it draws loose to forced connections in order to cater to a vague anti-war sentimentality (all the while consisting of logical fallacies and unfounded leading questions). I'd like to see an anti-war … Read Morewebsite that conducts its business ethically. Really. I'd say that war is almost always unethical and is rarely necessary. It shouldn't be hard to cover something so unethical as it happens in current events in an ethical way.

They're not just pulling this stuff out of their ass, there has indeed been what could be described as an invasion of Somalia. The US government very well may want to occupy Somalia, but no where in the article did was it said that they were, he's just guessing. You don't know either.

ap- ""Witness Abdi Ahmed said six helicopters buzzed the village before two of the aircraft opened fire. After the helicopters fired, soldiers in military fatigues got out and left with the two wounded men."'
attack – to set upon in a forceful, violent, hostile, or aggressive way, with or without a weapon; begin fighting with:
Invasion – an act or instance of invading or entering as an enemy, esp. by an army.
seems to me to be apt terms for describing a military force entering a country and killing people
as far as why? well Afghanistan does not have resource either but it does have on special quality… GEOGRAPHY !
I guess I'm not dramatically speculative enough to fit in here. I guess we could be using Al Qaeda as a cover to occupy a chaotic and lawless nation with no desirable natural resources so we can capitalize on their prime geographic closeness to more chaotic civil war and lack of desirable resources. And with the Iraq and Afghan wars, recession, stimulus bill, and push for health care reform it's a totally affordable venture with the promise of lucrative resources like civil war and dirt. Oh and no one will ever suspect because the branch of the military we sent in has never been used to occupy a country as it has never been trained nor is it equipped to do such a thing. And no one will figure out our machinations since we live in a post-enlightenment world that is governed by reason, and the only way anyone could catch on to what we're doing would entail using well-calculated irrationality. I just hope that no one figures out that we've been secretly occupying Kosovo since we pretended to just bomb it. But oh no! someone discovered the dictionary!!! Our secret code can be broken! Since we "attacked" certain targets that happened to be in Kosovo with an army, that means we "invaded" the country for our own unforeseeable gain! Man, I feel so stupid for not anticipating someone having the ability to look up definitions of commonly understood words online. And then you copied and pasted?! Damn you're good. Wait a tic… maybe I can devalue your substantive remarks with an equally rationally substantial (lazy) maneuver!
Pseudointellectual: –noun
1. a person exhibiting intellectual pretensions that have no basis in sound scholarship.
2. a person who pretends an interest in intellectual matters for reasons of status.
–adjective
3. of, pertaining to, or characterized by fraudulent intellectuality; unscholarly.
. "I just hope that no one figures out that we've been secretly occupying Kosovo since we pretended to just bomb it."
cut and paste to the rescue
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Bondsteel BLAM!
as for the strategic water way that just so happens to be the only way to the suez, i don't recall any conflicts fought over control of that meaningless piece of i dirt…..
and now the ad hominem!
no where did i ever claim to be an intellectual. but just stated my thoughts
"guess I'm not dramatically speculative enough to fit in here." au contraire!
since the only time the word occupation is used is (ill add this CUT AND PASTE disclaimer from now on to avoid my finger getting to lethargic )"Though without any concrete information about what the American military actually intends to do in Somalia it will be difficult to speculate about the size and scope of the invasion, with roughly 200,000 soldiers committed to Iraq and Afghanistan (and more escalations on the way in the later) it seems hard to imagine the nation is looking to commit to yet another long-term occupation.."
so as you see you are quite skilled in the art of pulling thing from whence no one knows.
and yes im glad you know of this "dictionary" as well i find it very useful in finding out the commonly accept meaning to many of these things called words….. for invade and occupy are two separate words in mine, they even have different meaning… well its a good thing i have this thing
any way thanks for that laugh about Kosovo that was great i mean soon some wack job is gona come on here and start talking about how America backed that breakaway province bid for independence and the other crazy totally irrational people might start talking oil pipelines or worse a bunch of commies might start saying we there becuase of Russia… ha! i mean please what are these people thinking the united states only engages in war fair when there is a big pile of booty to pay off our domestic expenses!

Oh, and I guess we should get rid of foreign embassies by your logic. Go back to grade school learn how to think logically and how to write without sounding like a pretentious cave man.
since you seem not to care to address your own flaws, i will let it pass.
"Oh, and I guess we should get rid of foreign embassies by your logic"
sound like a first good step to me!
I didn't find the article offensive. I would hope there is no one out there that is for war. However, we have a threat that is different than any other kind of threat that we have had before. Al-Qaeda is a name that represents a group of terrorist from different countries all over the world. It is not the only terrorist organization that exists. Terrorists usually do not have a country per say that they are fighting for. They are organized for a purpose or a universal reason. This is not a defined enemy even with the name that we use. What makes it so difficult to overcome this kind of an enemy is that we do not have a static location or people to target. You all know this but we forget what we know because we infiltrate their lairs in different countries. I do not believe that this is a war we will ever win. What we seem to be doing now is slowing it down although the more we fight and destroy the more willing participants seem to flock to their ranks.
I do not know what the answers are and I am afraid that is the problem with those in charge of our military as well. Hopefully in the future some grand plan will be discovered that will allow us to battle this enemy effectively. Until that happens I guess we are doing the best that we can. I do know that a higher power exists and I believe there is a grand plan here. With that I do have faith that life will go on.

Hopefully we will find the answers we need to win this war on terrorism. Until we do I really do not see an end to the conflict.
whether you agree with it or not, Somalis shall + will = never welcome the US into their country
the US is responsible for the mayhem in that country and for 20 years, it was the the same evil United States that was waging a silent genocide with multi-dimensions against the Somali people, and to my amazement like many Somalis, they expect us to abandon our views and turn around an embrace without restitution for the zillions of dollars worth of damages done to the Somali property, land as well as other vital organs that could have easily allowed Somalia to stand with its own two feet, but thanks to the US, they are now a distance memory and would take years and years to get them back.
the US foreign policy towards Somalia is a complete failure and no Somalis compatriot is going to do any favor for the US, other than to do the opposite of they expect.
the other day, the US ambassador for Kenya was speaking in the BBC and was subsequently air in Voice of America, and listening to his trash makes you wonder and then laugh. he said "all Somalis can contact me and we will work together in re-building Somalia, but with one condition, that you abandon the support for the Al-Shabaab" 🙂
very funny guy, I think he was drunk
just two weeks ago, 100 tons of weapons were shipped to Somalia, a special gift from the United States, and you really start asking yourself, ARE THEY ON COCAINE or do they assume we are blind to their evil deeds????
if the US is serious about making peace with the Somalis, they should consider
1. a compensation to every Somali = $10 million dollars per individual
2. apology
3. return of the HAWD AND RESERVED AREAD (OGADEN, the best grazing land of Somalia) to the MotherLand
4, re-stating the Socotra Island as part of Somalia
5. and the return of the NFD, once again to the motherland
Anybody that believes this halberdash has never served in the military.
Somalia is a wicked country and it must be contained.
