The main obstacle between the Yemeni capitals of Aden and Sanaa is the city of Taiz, and from the start of the Saudi invasion, that city has been in a state of stalemate. Despite that, when violence flares elsewhere, people look to again challenge the area.
That’s been true in the Maarib fighting as well, with Yemeni military forces trying to make gains in the hillside around the city, and claiming progress. The Yemen Army claims to have ambushed and killed 18 Houthi militia members in the recent attack.
They are trying to spin this as signs of the Houthis facing huge losses, though only a few city blocks appear to have changed hands yet, and a lot of deadly fighting has gone of with nothing being decided.
These high hopes of the situation about to change are a big part of how this war has lasted six years with so little territory gained or last. Huge death tolls are seemingly all that can be counted upon.
