On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced new sanctions on Russia over the alleged poisoning of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny. The Commerce Department said the new measures will tighten export restrictions “of items controlled for national security reasons that are destined for Russia.”
The sanctions tighten restrictions that were put in place over the alleged poisoning of former Russian military officer intelligence Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England. The US alleges both the Skripals and Navalny were poisoned by Russian intelligence using a nerve agent known as Novichok. Moscow denies involvement in either poisoning.
Earlier this month, the US slapped sanctions on seven senior Russian officials and 14 Russian entities over the jailing and alleged poisoning of Navalny. The sanctions were coordinated with similar measures from the EU.
The Biden administration seems keen to ratchet up tensions with Moscow, and reports say more sanctions are coming. The US is reportedly preparing new sanctions that will target the Russia-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
The administration might also roll out sanctions over a US intelligence assessment that claims Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to influence the 2020 election to hurt Biden. The assessment from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence offered no evidence to back up the allegation, and Russia dismissed the claims as “baseless.”
Russia recalled its ambassador to the US on Wednesday after President Biden called Putin a “killer” in an interview with ABC. Biden also threatened action over the ODNI assessment.
By shutting down the Keystone, ending fracking and restricting oil drilling
Biden just gave Putin the largest revenue increase in a decade.
Question is, does he know that?
No!
Lower US production drives the price of oil up, Putin is well pleased.
One of the main responsibilities of a US president is to keep oil prices high so that shale producers can turn a profit versus regular drilled crude.
As for Keystone, it was just a land grab / corporate welfare scheme that primarily benefited a Canadian (and partially Canadian government-owned) company. Biden’s reasons for quashing it were bad ones, but it’s still a good outcome.
Biden’s policies are driving oil prices up,
Putin is a beneficiary.
What about our wonderful dictator allies in the Middle East? Won’t that help them. Russia benefits from this. Why is it that other countries we don’t like are always referred to as the man/or woman who is the leader and called “a regime”? According to Pompeo, China is never China, but always an “actor”, a “regime” or the “Chinese Communist Party.” By that standard, we are now the Democratic Party Regime, and of course an actor. Or, just “Biden”.
What “good outcome” are you referring to?
That may be – but Biden is so far gone that my answer to your question, is still “no”
This is beyond hypocrisy. The US government has a long list of those that it abuses, persecutes, tortures and murders. Assange, Snowden and Manning are examples of individuals. But whole populations and nations are targeted by the US state. Sanctions kill covertly. Bombs and bullets kill overtly. The only crime is failure to obey the criminals that run the US state.
