The latest in months of such intercepts, a US RC-135 spy plane was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 in the Black Sea, where it was heading toward the Russian border. The Russian Defense Minister confirmed the interception.
According to Russian officials, the plane was intercepted and “escorted” away from the border. There were no specific details from US officials, who so far have not commented on the matter.
That’s not unusual, as the US generally only comments if they can call Russia’s interception “unsafe.” Both nations intercept one another’s planes commonly when they get too close, and provocative US flights in the Black Sea have become very common.
The matter happens as the US wants a growing NATO presence in the Black Sea, though the sheer number is raising tensions with the Russians, who don’t appreciate all these coastal approaches.
