With military tensions surrounding Taiwan already on the rise, the island decided this would be a good time to conduct a series of missile tests from several areas. This sparked an immediate reaction from China, in the form of multi-role fighter jets.
The Defense Ministry reported the planes entered Taiwanese airspace early Wednesday, but that Taiwanese planes intercepted them and chased them back out of the area. China sent Su-30 and J-10 fighters. No serious incidents were reported.
Taiwanese officials condemned the “unilateral actions,” and tried to link them to President Tsai’s call for a coalition of democracies to defend freedom in the region. It seems clear, however, that the missile tests precipitated the reaction from China.
This may not be the end of the matter, either, with Taiwanese officials saying the missile tests are scheduled to continue into Thursday, and China no doubt continuing to watch that very closely.

The PRC’s claim to jurisdiction over Taiwan is no more obviously legitimate than would be a similar claim by the regimes that rule Mexico or Guinea.
You lost me there. Seems more the detritus of WWII to me. We backed the wrong horse (Peanut) and spent decades realizing it. I may not be happy with the the results of the end of British colonial control of Hong Kong but I will not say that it’s not part of China.

Hong Kong was never, prior to 1997, under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party. And the Chinese Communist Party is not the same regime as Sun Yat-Sen’s Republica of China, nor is it the same regime as the Qing Dynasty.
There is no “China” which has retained the same declared or enforced borders over the course of the millennia of history, so invoking the word “China” to demand that this or that regime be recognized as entitled to rule some particular piece of land is at least as absurd as using the word “Israel” to demand that the claim of Diaspora Jews on a piece of Palestine be recognized as valid.
Hong Kong was “leased” from China for one hundred years. The lease expired in 1997 and Hong Kong returned to mainland Chinese rule under a forty year “0ne state two systems” intermediate arrangement.
Hong Kong was “leased” from the Qing Dynasty for 100 years. Then that dynasty was overthrown and no longer exists.
Chiang Kai shek was Chinese President from 1928 to 1949, when he was driven from the Chinese mainland by the communists during the civil war and fled to Taiwan which had always been part of China. There he continued his regime. Taiwan has always been part of China also recognised by previous Amirican regimes, until Trump. If Taiwan had been attached to China it would now have been under Chinese rule. It is the 80 km of sea in between that saved Chiang Kai shek.
