US and Chinese ties were already very strained, and Chinese officials warn they are “seriously harmed” after the US ordered them to close their Houston consulate on Wednesday. US officials accused China of spying.
This is likely to be more than just a single incident, as Chinese officials say they “must retaliate” against the US for such a move. It’s not clear what form that will take, but the US has considered consulates in China that could be targeted.
Closing a consulate is viewed as an extremely hostile move, and it would be virtually obligatory to do something on a comparable scale. The concern is that the US will retaliate over the retaliation and the relations will get worse.
Chinese media suggested that closing the Wuhan Consulate would be too minor, and one suggested Hong Kong’s Consulate might be more desirable as the US obviously uses it as an intelligence center.
more short sighted stupidity from the idiot amerikans….”of all peoples in an advanced stage of economic civilization amerikans r least accessible to long views—always and everywhere in a hurry to get rich they give no thought to remote consequences, they see only present advantages…amerikans do not remember, amerikans do not feel. amerikans live in a materialist dream”. Moisede Ostrogorski
Putting “idiot” in from of “Amerikans” is redundant 🙂
Hit the US where it hurts–in the pocket. It’s the only thing they understand.
China did, but hit the wrong people.
Farmers and small business were denied their fair share of the Chinese economic pie, while financial elites like those behind JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs and Tesla were allowed in.
That contributed a lot to popular anti-Chinese sentiment, never mind that U.S. elites started the trade war.
The American middle class could have withstood the American sanctions, which forced them to pay more for Chinese goods, but not without being able to do business in China themselves.
Here are some recent comments about China from an interview with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo:

It is very clear that Washington is feeling threatened by China’s growing world presence, and is becoming the new bogeyman in the Cold War Part II.
The US deep state is in rage it can`t catch up with China unless it takes the all out destructive path……even that is not a slam dunk.
It would be easy for the U.S. to dominate except for the losses to corruption.
Its like how American Asians are quota’d at Harvard in spite of merit; they study too hard and would require everyone else do the same instead of partying.
So, its easier just to cancel them.
Good move by China, the closure of the US consulate in Chengdu will hurt.
US Wuhan consulate is already closed, the US staff left the Wuhan consulate for the US and now wants to return, but without getting tested and 14 day quarantine.
… No testing , no quarantine???
While I don’t buy the COVID-19 hype, testing and quarantines are pretty much standard for all foreign travelers everywhere now.
“The American Century” is turning into a nightmare for the US
This is the Eurasian Century.
The American Century was the last one.
Yes The New American Century was not a plan for a stable America….
The roots of natural philosophy and rights runs the deep in the US. We had too be neutered and crushed for globalists too be secure in their establishment of hierarchy in the world through fiat enslavement. The upside for them is they could use our strength to impose the world order, at the same time retraining the US populace away from natural rights traditions and utterly gutting our productive capacity making it dependant on Chinese production lines…..
Now we’re just needed too rot away and the Western tradition will have few strong countries as a power base.
The level of the US admin. arrogance is beyond belief.
US National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot has announced.
China has no right to respond to the US closure of the Chinese Consulate in Houston by shutting down the US diplomatic mission in Chengdu.
The US Chengdu Consulate is closing…The Hong Kong’s Consulate will be the next….!
Great move. China is the most like Nazi Germany of the major powers. Cut off the fascists.
Never Forget. China invaded Tibet and enslaved and killed hundreds of thousands of Buddhist monks.
China is a dictatorship that has millions of Muslims in camps. yet liberals gaslight Trump on our southern border camp issue — an Obama phenomena.
China sent tanks to kill thousands of their own students and now they are building islands in the middle of the ocean, threatening other countries. These islands need to be returned to waterways.
… Whatever the crimes of the CCP, they were within their own borders, whereas there’s no justification for U.S. massacres in the name of freedom across Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, and now expanding into Africa.
Just because an autocratic nation oppresses and kills its ‘own’ people, does not give us leave to jump in and kill them too.
Historically, civil warring against the Emperor is kind of normal for China anyway. Its just that, they are oppressing for their own local benefit, not the West.
More or less…
… Chengdu is China’s Houston? Well, OK.
China was getting too comfortable with the West anyway; they forgot the past, while the average Westerner, is insouciant to the free trade foundations of their own prosperity.
China trade can make or break nations – and classes within nations.
The assumption that money and prosperity would have more sway with filthy rich ruling elites than hegemony and hubris was a grave error on China’s part. Throwing the Western middle class out, was a predictable response, the Western elites would have counted upon.
Midwestern farmers and small businesses out of China, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Tesla into China.
Not a fair deal for common Westerners, nor China in the long term. China rewards the hands behind the hand that slaps them and betrayed their fellow Westerners.
Trump owns this, for all that his daughter had a factory in China. Though, the Democrats would act no differently.
