Five Iranian tankers carrying $45.5 million in gasoline are headed to Venezuela, in response to shortages Venezuela asked for help with. The shortages were driven by US sanctions, and the US is unhappy with Iran’s shipments, accusing them of violating US bans.
The US accused Iran of taking gold as payment in a previous shipment to “circumvent” sanctions, though this isn’t in any way illegal for Iran to do. US officials say they are “considering measures” to take against Iran for selling fuel to Venezuela.
That’s not sitting well with Iran, which doesn’t believe they need US permission to trade. Iran has complained to the UN on Sunday about the matter, and summoned the Swiss Ambassador in Tehran to complain to the US over the threats.
In practice, the US is sanctioning Iran so much already their options are likely limited. This is another chance for Iran to complain about the unreasonableness of US positions, and allows the US more chances to threaten non-specific action against Iran.
… Five tankers…. well gold is up and oil/gasoline is down.
Maduro probably got a good deal, if the tankers ever arrive.
The balance was probably calculated and haggled first in U.S. dollars, on both sides even if dollars weren’t used in the final exchange.
People keep saying gold will replace the dollar, but even a commodity trade has to answer to the dominant measure of value.
the UN is toothless if they try to stop us from sinking those iranian vessels once they get out into open water. anyone who violates our sanctions get what they deserve. it will either be a blockade (boring) or an outright sinking of all those ships if they attempt to come into our hemispheres waters.
Exactly how would the US justify sinking Irans ships. They are legally entitled to trade with another country no matter what the US says. Iran can easily respond in kind to US commercial ships in the Hormuz
we sanctioned them so they must abide by that. crying to the UN won’t help as we are not subject to any international laws especially from the UN. if we so decide we will take over the straight of hormuz and not allowing them any access to it.
Nope US laws dont apply to the whole world, Iran is free to carry out trade with any country it wants, exactly why must Iran obey is Iran now in the US!!
we will impose sanctions so severe the mullahs will need permission from us to get their beards trimmed.
Either your are thoroughly brainwashed by American propaganda or else you are being sarcastic, I’m never sure which one it is.
Only the UN can impose international sanctions. Sanctions by the USA against Venezuela are illegitimate in International Law.
There are some Sanctions against Iran by the UN but none that would prevent Iran from selling oil.
I can never tell whether you are completely brainwashed by American propaganda, or whether you are just being sarcastic.
The USA cut of shipments of dilutent to Venezuela so they buy from Iran Russia or China, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
A blockade of Venezuela however would be a big step in the wrong direction for Washington.
Washington is very good at taking big steps in the wrong direction.
we will not blockade china or russian vessels. iran we can bully around to our hearts content and they will do nothing. those other two bigwigs are exempt and can do anything they want like we do.
