Continuing the Trump Administration’s campaign against China’s Huawei Technologies, US prosecutors issued a new indictment of the company accusing them of a series of charges, including stealing technologies and helping Iran identify protesters in 2009.
The indictment named six US companies, claiming Huawei conspired to steal trade secrets from them, in violation of a racketeering act. They further claimed Huawei provided technology to Iran to monitor protesters in 2009, and were responsible for Iran arresting some of them.
Huawei has been targeted by the US because it provides 5G technology, and the administration has argued that nations that use that technology are at risk of espionage. Since the US used cellular technology for espionage for years, they envision that as an inevitable consequernce.
Huawei officials dismissed the indictment as an attempt to further damage the company’s reputation after months of US lobbying. They said the racketeering allegations were civil allegations that were nearly 20 years old.
Indeed, one of the main trade secrets was from 2000, when the company gained access to source code for Internet routers. They used this to sell their own routers in the US as a lower cost version.
Yup, Huawei stole US technology, which is why they kicked the butts of companies like Cisco, etc., and left other 5G manufacturers in the dust. LOL.
So Democrats everything is Russia’s fault, Republicans everything is Iran’s fault, MIC everything is Russia, Iran, and China’s fault. There is certainly not some push to get us to fight WW3 or anything…
To me, it looks more like pushing to see just how far others can be pushed. If China, Iran and Russia are not going to start WWIII over being pushed and nibbled at the edges, US can just keep on pushing. They see no risk.
In fact, it is practically cost free. Just invent more accusations use courts for fun. What can go wrong?
Seems more of a ramping up of Americans willingness to contest the ‘East’ for control of the world island. Citizens don’t seem to be convinced terrorism is a good enough reason so we need a new reason to stay.
As if they took any code. One can always find coding similarities, in fact, blocks and blocks of code performing similar function are nearly identical wherever written. Much of such techniques have been available in line for a long time, all in effort to standardize industry globally to our standards. And it was not until China started selling cheaper routers that Cisco woke up. Chin decided to settle to avoid confrontation. That was then. Today, as China is ahead of us technologically, these shenanigans will not be of any use. More for domestic political market. How is this going to restore US technological edge?
“They further claimed Huawei provided technology to Iran to monitor protesters in 2009, and were responsible for Iran arresting some of them.”
Wow. Talk about grasping at straws.
Not controlling a technology you don’t have a backdoor access is difficult to give up.
Last week Huawei sued Verizon in Texas for violating 12 Huawei patents. I guess the tech theft thing goes both ways.
China is way ahead in 5G technology and the Yanks are furious! It is the USA which uses spying while it blames China. To pretend anyone would really find US “intellectual property” advanced is a joke.
It’;s not illegal for China to trade with Iran. Piss off yank.
I strongly suspect that one reason for the ban on Huawei is that it does not have a backdoor that facilitates easy spying by the US government and all US companies have a back door.
It is also difficult for a capitalist country like the US to compete with a socialized country that is concentrating on tech and has a growth rate of double the US growth rate for the last 20 years.
