US disarmament envoy Robert Wood issued a statement Tuesday condemning Iran for threatening to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if their civilian program was referred to the UN Security Council by European nations.
Withdrawing from the NPT would be a “very, very negative message,” Wood insists. He further demanded Iran “end its malign behavior” and accept talks with the US to resolve both the nuclear issue, and their ballistic missile program.
Iran warned about the possibility after European nations, France, Germany, and Britain, activated the dispute mechanism for the P5+1 nuclear deal. It was revealed that the nations only did so because the Trump Administration threatened them with auto tariffs if they didn’t comply.
Iran’s NPT warning cautioned the European nations against any more rash moves. This public sort of warning was risky, however, as the US is liable to steer those nations into exactly that situation, with an eye toward further undercutting Iran’s civilian program.
Withdrawing from the NPT would indeed be a very serious move, and could be expected to provoke a harsh international reaction. The US could even use it to try to start a war against Iran.
Withdrawing from the NPT, like the demise of the INF treaty, would be one more step on the road to – not just regional – but world war.

This is a perfectly reasonable reaction by Iran when the ‘international community’ makes compliance virtually impossible.

There is one massive difference between then and now, and we can only hope it is a major factor… in 1941, we were at peace and had been for years and years. Now, this country has been an interventionist power for decades. People are sick of war. Still, If anyone is foolish enough to start this, Iran will block Hormuz and sink the Fifth Fleet if they try to break it. And I think anger over all those dead sailors will win out over war weariness. Hope I’m wrong.
Never underestimate the gullibility of the US public. A staged attack blamed on some fictional “Iranian Muslim ISIS Russian North Korean fanatic” is all it takes to whip the populace into a war frenzy. Unless there were protracted attacks against US targets across the globe, with daily headlines with dozens of casualties, we wouldn’t feel the heat.

Add “malign behavior” to the list of things that if you repeat them enough, they become fact. Along with “state sponsor of terror” or “Iranian proxies”. And the ballistic missile program is called self defense. I guess we want to make sure the next time we assassinate someone of major importance that they don’t have the ability to retaliate.

I ask is that you share this information. I post this in all relevant
threads because our sailors’ lives matter. One of the earliest
theaters of battle in any full scale conflict would be the Strait of
Hormuz. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Iranians will sink
almost the entire Fifth Fleet if it attempts to break an Iranian
blockade of the water way.
Every
American needs to understand the Millennium Challenge 2002 war game
and its implications. 15,000 sailors’ lives in the Fifth depend on
it. Iran will absolutely be as successful as van Riper in the Strait.
This is not a matter of technology and firepower, which they could
never match, a fact they are well aware of, so they have built their
navy SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS SITUATION.
And of course, thousands of Iranians would die. That’s the whole
point. It is a matter of the relative numbers of small craft and
missiles against oil tankers and warships, and it is a matter of the
relative maneuverability of big clunky oil tankers and warships
against asymmetric swarm tactics in the strait, and they
win.
When the US destroyed in basically a day the Iranian Navy in Operation
Praying Mantis in the 1980s. what was destroyed was an inferior
conventional navy. This is not what they face today.
No amount of bravery can overcome numerical and physical reality. If
there are 50 suicide boats surrounding and speeding at you, and you
sink 45, 90%, you can take your A-minus to the bottom of the sea. Add
barrages of anti-ship missiles, and the situation becomes even more
hopeless.
A blue water navy cannot triumph here. Indeed, will be destroyed here.

With such massive loss of life, I fear that the Trump Administration will
successfully mobilize a full scale invasion. VietIran at best. Wwiii
in fact. And while the most alarmist position is correct here, consider if they “just get lucky” (as I have been told that is the only way they will sink any ships at all, such misplaced hubris) and just sank one destroyer, 300 men?
