According to NBC News, satellite photos from North Korea show the construction of a temporary structure adjacent to a missile factory, a site which was believed to be related to long-range missile production.
This is leading to immediate speculation that North Korea is increasing ICBM production going forward. It’s not apparent that’s actually the case, however, and many satellite photos lead to worst-case scenario accusations.
In reality, it’s not uncommon for there to be the appearance of some activity at North Korean sites, even if it’s not apparent what they’re doing or why. This may reflect a North Korean attempt to keep Western pundits guessing.
Right now, with the year-end deadline looming large, all of the guessing seems to be that North Korea is going to do something provocative and then the US will retaliate. That may just be the common pessimism that has pervaded North Korea diplomacy throughout, however, and there might not be any actual move coming.
