Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is keen to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, on the grounds that the US is going to let him do so. Israeli officials, particularly military officials, are warning against one of the primary targets, the Jordan Valley.
The Jordan Valley, which connects the West Bank to Jordan, is something the Israeli right has long wanted to annex, as it would mean the rest of the Palestinian West Bank would never have a border with any nation other than Israel.
Military officials are warning that the big problem would be with Jordan itself, and that this move would further damage Israel-Jordan ties, and might force the Jordanian government to take drastic steps.
Netanyahu doesn’t appear to be taking these warnings seriously, however, saying that he has the “full right” to annex the Jordan Valley at any time he chooses. The possibility was apparently broached with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and while the US has not commented on it, all indications are that they are fine with Israeli annexations in general.
How much trouble can Jordan really cause?
I imagine the Israelis just dismiss it.
I think that is a mistake. It depends on who they find as new friends. In the Mideast today, there are many options.
Because “the US is going to let him do so”???!!!???
That means the US will pay for it and defend it.
Greater Israel on the backs of American stooges.
Like the junkeez monkeys…!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nobody worries about Jordan, get real.
Jordan has always been an easy screw for the rogue nuclear micro-state. They will have to annex a lot more than the Jordan Valley to be a true nuclear heavy weight. Just a few well placed thermos would put them totally out of any power politics business. They may have the throw weight, but without any geographic strategic depth they would be easy picking for any of the large players. And with the huge leaps being made in the defensIve & evasive stealth arena, the time is here when an offensive attack could result in minimal damage to the targets, but provoking an unexpectedly brutal response of an exitential ruinous nature. Especially true for entities lacking strategic deepth. Bluff and bluster are becoming more and more of a liability to small entities who challenge larger more robust ones. Any mistakes can invite vast destruction complete ruin…
