During a surprise visit to Afghanistan for Thanksgiving, President Trump revealed what has been reported a few times recently, that US negotiations with the Taliban are back on, and a peace deal is again being sought.
The US and Taliban had several months of negotiations with one another in Doha earlier this year, culminating in an all-but-finished deal, though President Trump withdrew from those talks at the brink of a deal, declaring the process “dead.”
At the time, officials said it was because what was decided didn’t include an immediate ceasefire, though neither the Taliban nor US ceased fire. President Trump is now reporting that the Taliban want to do a ceasefire as part of a deal.
Previous reports suggested the US was engaged with the Ghani government in Afghanistan about specifics. It’s not clear what those are, nor is it clear if the Taliban ceasefire would also require a US ceasefire, or if the US is planning to try to talk them into disarming and then rushing in to overwhelm them once the deal is secured.
“During a surprise visit to Afghanistan”
In World War II, the Germans took six weeks to conquer France. The French surrendered on June 22, 1940 and on June 23, Adolf Hitler publicly toured Paris.
In the US war on Afghanistan, US presidents still have to sneak into the country like burglars 18 years after the initial invasion.
Similar to St. Pence’s visit to Iraq.
Air power is a real power, of a sort. There is no honor in it.
Yup, you sneak into a country when you want to steal it. It’s a habit with America.
I guess the Donald has forgiven the Taliban for killing that US soldier during the previous “peace” talks. Maybe it was because Pompeo was bragging about killing 1000 Taliban the previous 10 days prior to the US soldier getting killed or maybe the Donald just had a change of heart during a midnight cheeseburger binge. Either way it’s back to MAGA and time for the Trump loyalists to tell us how Trump is the most peaceful president during their lifetimes.
“a peace deal is being sought”…the strength of a political deal lies in the transparency in the details, bringing those aspects to light. That trump offers nothing, shows he has nothing to offer.
I don’t believe a word Trump says or tweets.
