After months of saying he wants talks with Iran, President Trump said on Friday that he believes Iran’s leadership wants to have talks, and that he is trying to get them together for the UN General Assembly.
That may be overly optimistic, as Iran has long taken the same position,
that talks are only possible if the US eases sanctions or returns to
the P5+1 nuclear deal. Since it’s long been assumed that won’t happen,
they’ve said the talks wouldn’t either.
Trump’s suggestion of a change may be based on hopeful statements from
one of President Rouhani’s aides, who thought the firing of John Bolton
this week meant the end of US “maximum pressure” strategy.
Bolton was seen as a major opponent of talks with Iran, and there has
been a lot of speculation Trump might make some concessions to get talks
going now with him out of the way. That said, Trump has yet to announce
any such proposal, nor has the administration confirmed any change in
US hostility toward Iran.
Trump will do for Iran what he’s done for North Korea. Nothing. But there will be more photo ops and headlines telling us how this hasn’t been done in X amount of years but the results will be the same. The sanctions will stay and our demand of total capitulation from both countries will continue. Trump’s game is so obvious.
I’ll take nothing all day every day instead of the chief alternative.
Sanctions aren’t nothing. People die, lives are destroyed. We don’t need either.
Perhaps trump needs Madalyn Albright to come into his cabinet to explain how well the sanctions are working…..
It’d be interesting to compare sanctions of past and present. Now when sanctions are mentioned you can think of half the planet and not be wrong. Like our killing with impunity, we have become desensitized to the suffering our sanctions cause and have caused.
Trump, so not the liberarian peacenik that everyone on this site was hoping for. Trumpters, wake up! Your man is beholden to dark Zionist entities that have taken over nation after nation: Palestine, and now us. It makes no difference who you vote for in 2020. AIPAC and Sheldon Adelson will ensure that you’ll be screwed.
That ain’t gonna happen.
At best, it’s another PR move, that Trump will contradict in 24 hours.
War with Iran is inevitable. There’s no way the US can have this sort of adversarial relationship with a (non-nuclear) country for thirty years and not have a war. Plus General Clarke told us of that list of seven countries the neocons intended to attack – and the only two on that list that haven’t been attacked – yet – are Lebanon and Iran. They’re next – in that order.
Exactly, the president has no power over the MIC.
There’s a long list of think tank thugs owned by the elite who decide which country starves, gets a color revolution, or just endures mass murder until all that is left are the natural resources the elite were after in the first place.
Not sure if this is gonna happen but there’s nowhere to go but up post-Bolton.
I wouldn’t bet on that.
Nothing can get worse either.
Now that Dalek Bolton is gone – or at least has taken a step back, Trump will like to negotiate about making the sanctions a little bit less strangulating so that he can be comfortable. That is not interesting for Iran.
Nah, Netanyahu and Sheldon Adelson, and their waterboy, Pompeo will not allow any agreement with Iran.
Bolton was fired because he failed to stroke Trump’s ego and not for any other reason.
trump is waiting to see what happens in the israeli elections before he makes any real overtures or concessions to the Iranians
Just another photo op.
