US officials have confirmed that they are now in direct talks with the
Shi’ite Houthi movement in Yemen. The talks were confirmed by Assistant Secretary of State David Schneker, who briefed reporters in Saudi Arabia.
Schneker said the talks are “narrowly focused on trying to end the war
in Yemen,” and that the two sides are seeking a “mutually acceptable
negotiated solution to the conflict,” though he offered no details on
the direction of that effort.
Such a direction for talks has interested officials for some time now,
particularly given the unpopularity of the Yemen War and the
difficulties it is causing in Congress for US arms deals to nations
involved in the war.
Talks are ongoing in Oman, and the US has been trying to get Saudi
Arabia to participate, though it’s unclear if that has happened. Saudi
Arabia may feel the Houthiss are a lower priority now with war breaking
out in South Yemen with the separatists.
And what exactly is US stake in Yemen, so Me. Schneker feels they beed a mutually acceptable solution. Congress “concern” (few honorable men and women excepted), was always decorative, a way to distance themselves from the whiff of genocide. But never in any single proposal did they seriously curtail US deadly naval blockade. Houthis always accused US for their plight, and death of civilians, not Saudi Arabia. Saudis in their eyes were merely the tool.
Now that the battle is between Saudis and UAE for the control of the South — North has won by default. But now that US is wondering if UAE horse will win as hoped, or will the two just hatch up a plan behind US back — time to be nice to Houthis. Let us talk! Lets forget starving, let us forget the UN officials that in our command ket sine food go through Hodeidah, just enough for you to know who controls your life. Lets forget all the accusations of you being Iranian stooges, so keeping you starved would go down easier. Let’s talk to find “acceptable” solution. North wants independence along previous state lines. Independence in imperial language dies not exist. Houthis will not be easily convinced, after they experienced the indifference if those calling themselves the international community.
Why would anyone want to hold direct talks with the US? They’d have to deal with Satan’s reincarnate, Pompeo or one of his worms. What would be the point?
