National Security Adviser John Bolton has been trying to push President
Trump into more and more hardline positions on Iran since taking over
the post. Now, reports are that Bolton is trying to convince Trump that he has to do something to force Iran to withdraw from the P5+1 nuclear deal before the 2020 election.
The US withdrew from the nuclear deal already, but Iran has so far tried
to maintain the deal with the remaining five signatories, Britain,
France, Germany, Russia, and China. Iran has expressed annoyance at the
nations’ inability to circumvent US sanctions, but has remained
committed to the deal in general.
Bolton is arguing that several Democrats are already criticizing Trump
for withdrawing from the deal, and that if he doesn’t get the deal
destroyed entirely before the November 2020 vote, it could become a
political problem for his campaign.
While US officials have insisted the deal is as good as dead since Trump
withdrew from it, and have tried to convince the EU nations to withdraw
as well, so far there is little sign of that happening. It’s also not
clear how the US might force Iran out of the deal, since they have no
powers under the deal since leaving the deal.
Disgusting display of bullying & duplicity.
Bonkers is worried that his plans of the last thirty years may be slipping from his Grasp, be clear Bonkers, IF the US attacks Iran, China will attack and invade Taiwan! the US cannot run a two front war against two different countries in two different hemispheres! Especially when one of them can actually attack the US mainland if it has to!
And then you woke up from that lovely dream realizing the reality. So says Mr. Stewart.
For any other nation this sort of behavior would not be acceptable. What else does the USA have to get away with? Destroying a sovereign nation of 80 million people by illegal and unwarranted “sanctions” is all right for the USA’s “free and fair” elections next year, so let’s do it? The other signatories for the JCPOA must strengthen their support for Iran, the injured party, not weakly give in to Bolton’s blackmail.
The mustache is day dreaming!
Bolton and Pompeo are the president’s greatest threat to his reelection.
“Bolton is arguing that several Democrats are already criticizing Trump
for withdrawing from the deal, and that if he doesn’t get the deal
destroyed entirely before the November 2020 vote, it could become a
political problem for his campaign.”
The only way that makes any sense is if Bolton assumes – probably correctly – that the US electorate is so ignorant of foreign affairs that if Iran pulls out, Trump can blame Iran for the Iran war and thus everyone will forget by the election that it was the US who pulled out first.
How that’s going to prevent the Democrats – well, Tulsi Gabbard, anyway, until the Dems dump her, which is inevitable – from arguing that it’s all Trump’s fault, I don’t understand. And probably Bolton doesn’t either. And doesn’t care. If the Iran war starts before the 2020 election day, Bolton wins anyway. So the Democrats won’t have anything to say about it anyway, since they’ll all be “supporting the troops”.
This is the sort of argument the neocons can use because Trump is so stupid, ignorant and out of touch with what’s going on that that almost anything they say can be used to manipulate him into doing something even more stupid than what’s he done so far.
They will tell him anything as long as it contains the words “Iran” and “election” in the paragraph somewhere and he’ll buy into it even if it will obviously lead to his starting a war that will likely end his Presidency. And in the end, to the neocons, they couldn’t care less if it does as they know the next President will be equally ready to start or continue an Iran war.
I mean, even George Bush Jr. wasn’t this stupid – at least as long as he had Jim Baker and his father around to school him.
Who demands that one nation live up to an agreement the other wholly abrogated? One who fully expects to never have to answer for his folly.
