The US was counting on this week’s Venezuelan coup to be a success, and now that it isn’t, officials are getting ready to invade the country outright to impose that end result. The heavily US-backed opposition, however, isn’t entirely on board with this idea.
The administration may view coup or invasion as six of one, half a dozen of another, but opposition figures warn that a US invasion would cause more problems than it would solve, splitting the population even further and likely sparking a civil war.
Guaido’s top allies are also very leery of this idea, because even though it would probably get him into a position of nominal power sooner, it would only further the impression that he is a US puppet, as opposed to a grassroots leader.
That would be a problem both within Venezuela and across the region, as America’s long history of intervention in Latin America would be informing many states on where Guaido’s power actually lies, and who he has to keep happy to hang on to that long-sought position.
Just a thought:
The tortured argument (bs) by which Guido assumed his (yeah, right!) “interim presidency”, relies on constitutional provisions which also require an immediate presidential election. So let’s assume the United States invades, removes Maduro, installs Guaido, and arranges for an election. How are they going to prevent the supporters of Chavismo from re-electing Maduro — wouldn’t that be delicious — or in the alternative, electing a charismatic and effective anti-American supporter of Chavismo?
Highly problematic, this scenario, I’d say. The US rarely allows elections where it knows the result will go against what the US wants.
So bye bye Constitution. Bye bye presidential elections. Probably on the basis of the necessity of martial law in the midst of a civil war accompanied by a guerrilla “insurgency”.
Alternatively, and this is just for fun, in order to avoid Invasion and Civil War and the rivers of blood that would result — never going to happen by the way — Maduro announces ” Okay, you say the last election was flawed, let’s have another election.” Whereupon he proceeds with preparations for the election.
All the countries in the world, including the American Stooges, are so opposed to the bloodshed and destruction certain to result from a looming US invasion, jump on board with the proposal for an election. The election is held. Maduro wins yet again in another landslide, and the US is standing there totally helpless and humiliated.
Well okay, not helpless, but humiliated, it’s regime change plan and casus belli in the trash.
But again, not going to happen. China, Russia, the Pentagon, the rest of the world, and President Trump will never go for it. Instead, it’s exit Bolton, Pompeo, and Abrams stage right, far right.
Guaido may also realize that if the US does invade, it won’t install any government except its own puppet. If he’s not willing to be a complete puppet, he won’t be part of it at all.
Guaido is a Yanqui puppet with zero credibility and the Venezuelans know it. They smell it on him. He’s nothing but a pretty little plaything of our fascist mandarins in Wall Street and Washington. The opposition in Venezuela is so polluted with fabulists and double-agents that it is scientifically impossible for them to be taken seriously. They’re a lot like the opposition in Syria, a sick convoluted joke that poses more of a threat than the dictator they appose. Guaido’s Army is ISIS in Dolce Gabbana, wealthy brats with a thirst for violence.
“Guaido is a Yanqui puppet with zero credibility and the Venezuelans know it.”
And yet they elected him to their national legislature.
“The opposition in Venezuela is so polluted with fabulists and double-agents that it is scientifically impossible for them to be taken seriously.”
And yet it won a majority in the national legislature.
And it only took how many billions of dollars from the NED to pull it off? After how many years of sanctions? Real democracy happens in the streets and Guaido has been roundly poned in that arena. Maduro’s a dick but Guaido’s a joke. He and his followers have doomed any real opposition to failure with their errant chicanery. Rebels don’t suck Uncle Sam’s d*ck.
The GOP plans to use Venezula as the poster child of socialism, their go-to for 2020. Economic and 5th column pressure will remain until Nov 6. Then, Venezuela will be off the radar. I know, seems extremely cynical, but that’s where we are in our “reality show” culture.
