President Trump’s meeting with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro seems to be going well, with talk of a growing “North-South Axis,” and increasing interest in trade relations as well as deepening military ties.
While the most immediate impact was President Trump urging US rocket
companies to use Brazil for space launches, arguing it is the “ideal
launch location.” Deepening Brazil’s international role may be a bigger
deal.
Trump revealed he is “very strongly” inclined to accept Brazil into NATO, or at least granting NATO some sort of position of privilege within the alliance that may stop short of full membership.
This could include being granted Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) status,
which would give Brazil preferential access to the US weapons market.
They would be the second Latin American country with such status, after
only Colombia.
Oh Brother… Just what we need, more third world presence in our defense alliances and labor markets. And on immigration, from my vantage point, I see Brazil as s big exporter of poor immigrants. Mexico formerly required Brazilians to have a visa to transverse Mexico. Perhaps a decade ago, they ended the visa requirement. Ever since then, Brizalian illegal emigration to the U.S. has gone wild. Not a prime example of national solidarity amongst the Brizilian citizens. Not a neighborly policy towards the U.S. either. But more of business as usual.
NATO is not a “defense alliance.” If it was, then there would have been no place in it for the Baltics, Montenegro, and other such military liabilities.
No, nato is now just an american military hardware marketing ploy. Brazil can buy just like E Europeans.
NATO is a satrapy of the American Empires.
But according to Trump the satraps are not paying enough.
Trump is the smartest man he knows 🙂
Or Georgia! Or Ukraine!
Someone should tell the goofball it’s the NORTH Atlantic treaty–not the SOUTH Atlantic treaty.
Well, perhaps president Trump remembers vaguely from High School that the Earth’s magnetic field flips occasionally which means that the magnetic South Pole becomes the magnetic North Pole hence the South Atlantic becomes the North Atlantic. That can be the only explanation.
Indeed. He’s the only man I’m aware of who can hold two opposing ideas at the same time.
Tell it, Solly! Tell it! Everyone should tell that goofball it’s the North Atlantic Treaty, not the South Atlantic Treaty.
Actually, NATO has long outweighed its usefulness .. Just remove the word Treaty and replace it with Terrorist, since it’s been terrorizing defenseless countries worldwide for at least 6 decades, starting with the Korean War.
I could not agree war. We are wedded to violence even though reaching out with friendship and a helping hand would be the better way for everyone.
The current man in office is even more bonkers than his predecessors.
I believe it’s been renamed the New American Tyranny Organization.
Zing!
Zing!
And here I thought the Don thought NATO was obsolete.
It’s like he is taking the crash course lesson to the U.S. presidency.
Since an admission to NATO has to be unanimously approved this is nothing but blowing meaningless hot air to mollycoddle Bolsonaro.
Of course it’s out of the question that the US would then station an awful lot of troops much closer to oh, say, Venezuela or any number of other smaller countries down there that have some resource we want to get our hands on.
Wacky Trump. From disbanding NATO to expanding it. The idiocracy.
The article by A. Trevor Thrall of the Cato Institute published yesterday at AntiWar concerning Venezuela contains the same right wing talking points and lies used by Trump and Bolton as an excuse for intervention in Venezuela.
And yet it opposes intervention in Venezuela.
This invite is designed to be used against Maduro when Brazil and Venezuela have a “scuffle” forcing a U.S. intervention.
