The Trump Administration has committed to seeing a regime change in
Venezuela, aiming to oust President Maduro and replace him with
opposition leader Juan Guaido, seen as more friendly to US interests.
But previous talk of Maduro as a “gangster” in and of himself is
starting to fall by the wayside. Instead, officials, particularly
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are presenting the enemy in Venezuela as socialism in general, making this an ideological fight.
This somewhat changes the tone, if not the intentions, of the US push
for regime change, centering it not just on ousting a single government,
but demanding Venezuela as a whole abandon its present ruling ideology
in favor of one more palatable to US interests.
That’s a much different demand, and makes Venezuela’s decision to expel
the US diplomats from Caracas less surprising. Yet Pompeo, who had long
defended leaving the diplomats there, tried to talk around this
expulsion, presenting the withdrawal as a US decision related to the
worsening situation within Venezuela.
This, adds to constant US threats to resort to invading Venezuela
militarily to impose regime change. Pompeo presented the US diplomats as
a “constraint” on policy that is no longer in place, suggesting they
are nearing the point of intervention.
The New York Times seemed to be backing up the argument that the US
should escalate the situation, arguing that having backed Guaido and
failed to get him into power could be similarly to President Obama not
following through on 2012 threats against Syrian President Bashar
al-Assad. This seems likely to just encourage President Trump on a
military path, determined not to look weak.
Naturally Washington wants a regime in Venezuela ‘more friendly to US interests.’ The Administration has chosen Juan Guaido: his Popular Will party is, according to Wikipedia, affiliated to the Socialist International. Then wars are about power, not ideas or principles. But the US runs the risk of unleashing a ‘South American Spring’, already with huge military commitments globally – any of which could trigger world war three – it should not be further stretching itself. Like great civilizations of the past it runs the risk of getting the war it is trying to avoid, as the pattern of history predicts.

“Socialist International”. Which one? First, Second, or Third? Is Guaido a Trotskyist?
My hunch: the tamest of the tame Internationals.
“Naturally Washington wants a regime in Venezuela ‘more friendly to US interests”.
So Zionist’s Puppy, American Administration doesn’t believe in Democracy but Her Slaves, likes they are of Zionist Israel’s.
A spectre is haunting the American continent — the spectre of socialism.
All the old powers of the continent have entered into a holy alliance to
exorcise this spectre: USA and Colombia, Trump and Guaido, the US
Republican and Democratic Parties, and enforcers of the drug gangs.
I don’t think that the US interests care all that damned much about Venezuela’s oil – there actually is a glut of it in the World plus oil doesn’t have brilliant future. What has America’s elites on the attack is socialism and America’s new interest in it (thanks to Bernie and AOC). This is the real enemy of the rich. To them socialism means higher taxes, higher wages for their minions, and increased competition for their wealthy kids. Socialism means the end of the line for those riding in First Class. Socialism means that more poor, talented kids will go to the prestigious colleges. Socialism means more solidarity among the working class. And again of utmost severity, socialism means more progressive taxation. Socialism means higher inheritance taxes. Socialism means a more democratic health care system. Socialism is the sworn enemy of the elite plutocrats and they in turn are the sworn enemies of socialism.
If you think that Venezuela is the only target of the elites’ wrath, wait until they go after Mexico and their new socialist President.
It seems the NYT is continuing its war-promotion strategy which has not failed it yet, despite the lack of “wins” in the many aggressive wars the USA starts and refuses to end.
Since the USA seems to want to change the government of any nation that is not its puppet, any peace efforts by anyone else seem doomed to fail if the USA is not confronted and stopped.
btw What is going on now in the hugely promoted (by the USA) country of South Sudan, split off from Muslim-majority Sudan???
Then shouldn’t we drop bombs on the IRS?
Dreams of dominoes….
