Speaking on Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman accused Syria of planning to rebuild its army after the end of the Syrian War, and predicted that it might not only be as large as the pre-war military, but might even be bigger.
Specifics are very limited in this comment, which seems to just be Lieberman setting the stage for more military confrontations in the future. He accused Syria of being “not satisfied with taking control of all of the Syrian territory.”
Syria hasn’t actually done that yet, with rebels still controlling parts of the north. Yet even if they had, it would not be surprising for the Assad government to take the lesson out of the bloody multi-year war that they need to be prepared for large-scale conflict.
This is doubly an issue for Syria because Israel spent the better part of the war openly hoping ISIS would defeat them, and the past several months repeatedly attacking Syrian military targets at every opportunity. The end of the war within Syria doesn’t mean Syria won’t still have enemies abroad, and Israel is clearly one that believes it can attack Syria whenever it feels like it with no repercussions.
Is not surprising when sharing a border with Israel……..
…..and with good reason with bomb-happy Israel as a neighbor.
Gasp! Doesn’t Syria know that they are consigned to being the poor neighbor who isn’t allowed to have locks on their doors?
Someone tell Lieberman the Golan Heights is ancient Gaulantis and was never, ever part of Israel.
That might be but Israel controls the golan heigts now

USA should sell weapons to Syria to defend it self instead of selling weapons to Arabia to attack civilians in Yemen.
US made weapons would be of no use against Israel, particularly the Patriot. That is of course why Turkey is buying the S-400 instead of the Patriot missiles, and the real reason why the US/Israel is so offended by that.
If I were a Syrian, regaining “all of Syrian territory” includes the Golan Heights.
Is there some particular reason why Sykes-Picot’s magical creation of “Syria” and assignment of the Golan Heights to it is eternally binding, but that Balfour had no such magical powers over other bits of land in the area?
Sure – once something belongs to you, you consider it eternal. If somehow the Canadian government were to claim Seattle and its surroundings, I’d bet we wouldn’t let them get away with it. Ditto, if Iran were to claim Tel Aviv, we would hear mountains of self-righteous talk from Israel, plus a lot of nuke-rattling. Why don’t you ask yourself – why does Israel think that it is entitled to take Syria’s land?
Israel’s regime thinks it’s entitled to take Syria’s land because Israel’s regime thinks it’s entitled to do anything it damn well pleases — just like every other regime. The difference with Israel’s government being that it has a powerful sugar daddy who backs it no matter what, while most governments either have no external sugar daddy at all or one whose affections are conditional.
Amen, Brother! I wholeheartedly agree; if I, too, were a Syrian, regaining “all of Syrian territory” including the Golan Heights would be on the top of my list.
After the 1973 war with its Arab neighbors (including Syria), Israel returned the Golan Heights to Syria as part of the peace treaty signed by all parties.
So, why did the Zionist Entity retake the Golan Heights? Israel breaks every treaty it doesn’t like, and the Zionist Entity surely didn’t like this one; it didn’t want Syria as its southern neighbor. How they retook the Golan Heights, I don’t remember; but, there wasn’t any regional war over it.
Lets hope that Syria is able to get the most advanced weaponry available to deter, or shoot down Zionist fighter planes. Furthermore taking back the Golan Heights is a must.
No it is not Syria abused this area as a high point to harm Israel .
WRONG. You must be a Hasbara troll, Eric; Syria never abused the Golan Heights as a high point to harm Israel. Period. The only aggressive countries in the region are the Zionist Entity and Saudi Arabia; Israel’s been attacking peaceful protesters in the Gaza Strip and bombing Syrian villages, while the Saudis continue bombing Yemen.

Well, Syria did quite well, shooting down Israeli missiles; and, don’t forget, Syria also shot down Zionist fighter jets and sent those that escaped Syrian defense systems scurrying back to Israel.

Too late, Syria has already rebuilt its military.
Syria has to build a stronger military to prevent this from happening again . Do you under5stand if your military is weak ? Theives will try to take control and rob you
Why would Ave or anyone else think otherwise? Another country is in a protracted brutal war and now they are going to rebuild their military. I guess Israel wouldn’t do that under similar circumstances?
“Syria will rebuild its military after the war!!” REALLY? Is this some blockbuster news that is supposed to shock anyone? OF COURSE Syria is going to rebuild! Israel rebuilt its military after ’48, after 63, after ’73, and every other major or minor conflict its been involved in. Why should anyone expect Syria to do ANYTHING different?
