A new report out of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims that airstrikes by Syrian forces against rebel-held Eastern Ghouta have killed at leat 25 civilians on Sunday, including a number of children.
Eastern Ghouta is the last rebel bastion around Damascus, and the rebel territory within has been shirking. Russian officials have been trying to negotiate ceasefires and an evacuation of the area, but so far with little to show for it.
Of what remains, some of Eastern Ghouta is held by more moderate rebels, but some is also held by Islamist groups that are not party to ongoing peace efforts. It is these Islamists that tend to be the most regularly targeted.
Or at least the areas held by the Islamists. Airstrikes have consistently had a problem with accuracy throughout the war, and strikes against “enemy territory” tend to kill a lot more civilians than anything else.
