With a US carrier strike group steaming toward North Korea, and top administration officials talking up the need for the US to “solve” North Korea, Russian officials today echoed a concern shared by a lot of people, that the US is about to unilaterally attack North Korea.
Defense Secretary James Mattis sought to downplay those concerns, however, insisting the carrier strike group is just in the western Pacific in general, and isn’t speeding rapidly toward the Korean Peninsula for any particular reason, and has nothing in mind when it gets there.
It’s hard to imagine that this highly publicized move is just a whim, and even harder to believe that it is just coincidental with President Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson both talking up the idea of unilateral US action against North Korea to end its nuclear weapons program.
That’s doubly true because President Trump told Fox Business that the “armada” was full of “very powerful” US warships, and had been sent there because North Korea is “looking for trouble,” and the US intends to “solve the problem.”
North Korea shrugged off the comments either way, insisting that they have substantial capabilities to retaliate against any US aggression against them, and that US military bases could face nuclear retaliation in the even of such a US attack.
I hope these guys realize that once they initiate any attack on N. Korea that an all out war will break out on the peninsula. I used to assume basic common sense but not anymore.
The big money is likely on China already having warned the US off N.Korea. Mattis seems to be giving up that semi-secret part of it. Can’t be an alternative explanation for it because it’s obviously not meant to reassure China on the US intent.
And it’s a pretty safe bet that N.Korea isn’t intimidated, consiering their persistence on their rights to protect themselves.
But as always, the wild card is the psychopath that is your president!
Something is just seriously wrong with this administration. Esp. the foreign policy? I think this contradictory stupidity is being done on purpose as a psychological operation against all people, not just Americans.
A naval fleet that is approaching North Korea is also approaching China so they’ll be aware they may be the real target. I think if the fleet attacks either country then in response they will sink the whole fleet.
My bet would be one destroyer as a opening warning shot. Against China, the US would probably have to go nuclear but likely wouldn’t. Because Russia would likely go nuclear too.
In the second to last sentence, “even” should be “event.”
Sounds a lot like China has had to use a bit of tough talk on this affair. There’s just no way that China is going to allow the US to mess with China’s N.Korea proxy without some serious trouble coming out of it all.
I think 3 carrier strike groups is said to be the firepower the Navy needs to be effective. When W was gathering his wits to attack Iran back in the 00s they got to the point of actually having 3 groups in range of Iran but the Generals backed down telling W he could start a war but didn’t have the resources to finish one. Same is true now, and we have even fewer resources. But this country is in the hands of evil children and the adults in Congress who should live up to their constitutional mandate to approve or refuse the use of force (as in Syria) are on vacation…
Yup. Just happened to be in the hood. I can recall the Gulf of Tonkin “incident” in 1964. The fleet just happened to be cruising off the Vietnam coast. 5yrs later it resulted in my involuntary tour. There’s something about a guy who’s nickname is “Mad Dog” I don’t trust.
