In the waning months of last year’s campaign, President Trump was talking up a dramatic shift in US policy in Syria, a move away from regime change and a focus on fighting ISIS, along with a rapprochement deal with Russia. A little over two months after the inauguration and with little to show for the “change,” officials are back to Obama era hostility toward the Syrians.
A bombing attack in northwest Syria yesterday, allegedly a chemical weapons attack, is serving as the official justification for the narrative change, with President Trump insisting Syria had “crossed many lines,” and insisting that his position on Syria has changed, adding that “I now have responsibility when it comes to Syria.”
US, British, and French diplomats are all pushing for UN action against Syria now, though a Russian veto at the Security Council is assured, with Russian officials saying the resolution is based on “fake information.” US officials are already looking beyond the UN and threatening unilateral action.
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley insisted the UN has “consistently” failed to act against Syria, and insisted that states would as a result be compelled to act unilaterally without UN authorization. Haley added that Syria’s “illegitimate government” was committing “untold atrocities.”
All of this sounds remarkably familiar to the statements by US officials when the Obama Administration was planning to attack Syria, and while it’s not clear President Trump is willing to risk war with Russia by launching such an operation, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s warning that Russia needs to reconsider its continued support for Syria, suggesting that at the very least the administration is fine with continuing to raise tensions with Russia over the matter.
The gas attack incident, however, still has a lot of questions, with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons still just starting to probe the incident, and is well short of assigning responsibility. US officials, along with British and French officials, immediately had a complete narrative fitting with their interest in moving against Syria, and are refusing to consider any possibility that runs counter to that, including Russia’s suggestion that a conventional air strike had caused a leak in a rebel chemical cache.
The shift in US policy, however, really began before the alleged gas attack even took place, as in the days ahead of it, officials were again demanding Assad’s ouster, and rebel officials were reporting that the previously halted CIA arms shipments had been resumed recently.
Obviously, all of the same problems with the US moving against Syria militarily, which Trump pointed out in presidential debates, are still problems, and that may ultimately deter an American attack. Either way, the Trump Administration is looking to rebrand their official stance as a hostile one, and one which is likely to please other NATO members, who see it as a chance to forestall any normalization of US-Russia ties.
Don’t do it man. This was a false flag from Soros to spur action against Assad. Instead of taking action against Syria, how about arresting Nazi war criminal George Soros?
We’ve invaded Syria already. This grandstanding is just a reflection of internal arguing over escalation paths.
These SOB psychopaths in Washington will kill us all before they are through! Hug your children.
No kidding. Trump’s original plan to let the Russians finish with DAESH was the best one. Too bad it didn’t last past inauguration.
Trump is a f**king reactionary and the deep state knows it. It’s the only reason he’s still alive. They figured that if the election hacking nonsense wasn’t enough to convince Trump to forgo his Putin fetish then another red line crossing false flag attack would. And it appears they were right. One gas attack and Trump is so f**king desperate to prove his d*ck is bigger than Obama’s (news flash; it’s not) that he’s willing to completely reverse his whole position on Syria which is literally the only thing that made him slightly less revolting than Hillary. Good news to those of you who didn’t vote for either one of these c*nts (I didn’t either), it really didn’t matter. And to all the Trump voters suffering from buyer’s remorse tonight, vote safe in 2020. Vote third party. In Trump’s words, what do you have to lose?
It’s not that he’s a “reactionary”; rather, his whole campaign was a calculated fraud from the beginning.
Seems rather unnecessary to have butted heads with everyone over foreign policy when most of his supporters just liked his rhetoric on immigration, trade & guns, while more traditional conservatives simply looked past what they didn’t like because their bottom line was that Supreme Court appointment and it had to be anyone but Hillary.
.
I would disagree. Lots of people came to the realization that the Obama/Soros/Clinton axis brought us to the brink of war with Russia.
Then Trump stepped in and calculatingly pushed all the right buttons; questioning the need for NATO; questioning 9/11; presenting himself as an alternative to war/intervention/”nation building”, etc.
Naw, still support Trump without remorse.
Hilary wouldn’t need another fake gas attack to go medieval in Syria and would likely have wrecked the U.S. beyond any miracle 2020 candidate to repair.
People keep forgetting; there are no alternatives to Trump. We’ll see what happens in 2020, but its a safe bet that if Trump lasts that long, he’ll still be the most moral realistic contender.
Jill Stein was the most moral 2016 candidate, but she was never a contender. Nor would she have lasted, given what Trump has had to weather so far. Nor did she really seem to have a vision for rebuilding the civilian economy from the welfare-warfare dichotomy.
Trump’s biggest handicap is the welfare state civil bureaucracy and its hangers-on; they’re terrified he means no pension fund bailouts and a final surrender to the warfare state.
Whether or not Trump’s middle path between the two survives the squeeze remains in question, but his first 100 days are hardly up.
His biggest problems are that his Security adviser was already bumped off, his Attorney General is under siege and effectively neutered, he was humiliated on Health Care, his own son-in-law is threatened with investigation and trial by innuendo with terms like “treason” being thrown around, while numerous agencies operate in open defiance of the President and in concert with proponents of the Bush & Obama foreign policy direction. He’s almost a hostage in his own presidency already and being given distinct signals that more consequences could be comming if he doesn’t fall in line on the big issues.
Yeah…Trump the alpha male is suddenly a castrated impotent who can’t even go to the bathroom by himself. Most of the problems bedeviling his dumpster-fire presidency he has created and continues to create himself. He’s not a hostage. He is simply succumbing to the cold, harsh reality of the american people and congress. It ain’t some shady real estate deal where you stiff contractors, employ eminent domain, litigate without end and con investors. He’s out of his frigging depth on just about everything involving the running of this country…except of course for executive orders he might forget to sign.
Trump’s biggest problem is probably Jared Kushner; Trump’s fortunes declined with Kushner’s ascendance over the Mercer family and their people in the Trump circle.
The threat of investigation is hardly a serious one, though it will bind Trump more tightly to his son-in-law as he thinks Kushner is one of his own. Kushner would be an internationalist, as are most of the pro-Israeli types.
It seems the American Deep State counter revolution that blindsided the internationalists with the rise of Donald Trump, were in turn blindsided by the rise of Jerod Kushner.
If there is no alternative to Donald J Trump, a serial fucking liar and narcissist extraordinaire who uses logic like a drunk adolescent then we need to simply pull the plug on the fucking planet. Stein will never be president of anything relevant in this country, and she sounds slightly unhinged anyway…not that any agenda she would pose would ever survive the cauldron of congress. To put moral in the same sentence with a man with no core is something approaching imbecilic.
It approaches moral relativism, which is admittedly imbecilic in most scenarios. The 2016 candidates sounded more than a little unhinged; Jill Stein seemed sane compared to any of them. At least she wasn’t competing to be the toughest warlord. Or stoned in at least one live interview…
Since no person is 100% good or bad, moral relativism has its place in assessing persons in representative governance. Obviously one wants the best people, but just as obviously, one is stuck with a slate of everyone else’s idea of ‘best people’. It takes a lot of time and money to be really in on the selection process; most people won’t have those resources and those that do, are beholden to acquiring the resources.
Then there are the surprises; no-one who voted for Bill Clinton voted for Hilary, no-one who voted for Donald Trump voted for Jared Kushner.
The plug has been pulled on the planet anyways. A few years back Canadian journalist named Gwynne Dyer wrote a book called Climate Wars, in which he detailed the various climate change scenarios as they impact geopolitics and even human extinction as studied by the then-latest climate science and various militaries of the world.
Its a little dated and the India-Pakistan scenario original data was off, but its clear the decision has been made to go forward with climate change and war. Doc Snow of Letterpile gives a good summary of the changes since the original release. The global chessboard is to be played to a tune of climatic musical chairs over the next hundred plus years.
If you are familiar with Gwynne Dyer’s Climate Wars, then stuff like Brexit and Trump’s Wall make a lot of sense. The Trumpian movement promised a potentially softer landing for North Americans over the next few decades, but may not come to pass.
Frankly, I’m getting sick of voting at all. The whole process is just a scam.
You just find out this? Wow, that took you many years, yes they’re fooling people every four years and it’s not a secret to some people who really owns everything including presidents.
Spare me the patronizing tone. In the past I’ve always voted for 3rd party candidates, but they exposed them selves as frauds this election as well.
However this episode makes clear that it wouldn’t necessarily matter if the candidate is a fraud or a genuine reformer. A version of this coordinated mutiny & pressure campaign would also be applied to a different candidate (like a Sanders) if they attempted something similarly “unamerican” like universal healthcare, free education or rapid phaseout of fossil fuels in light transportation, heating & power generation. Besides blocking the legislative agendas, there would also be overt disobedience in federal departments, investigations with prejudicial charges of treason & high corruption, the picking off or leashing of staff & advisors, open musings about impeachment or mental illness *extraordinary lapses in WhiteHouse security,… either fll in line or chose to be a martyr (politically and maybe physically too..)
Bibi and Trump will kick Putin and Assad’s rear end. Yeah, all those crying regime change never mention how Assad let Jihadists attack American and Coalition forces in Iraq; this is all of Assad’s doing and there will be war as long as he is there. Oh, anti-war.com, is reporting on how the lovely worker’s paradise is outlawing photos hinting at Putin being gay outside of your reporting? So far in Putin’s pocket? Daddy Assad attacked a Christian nation in Beirut and clearly, the Syrian government allowed Hezbollah to bomb US Marines. What a biased website.
Then leave.
No you leave you Russian Troll all y’all were on Trump’s nuts when you thought you had a friend in the White House.I told y’all to watch what you wish for.Y’all helped get a Republican in office now reap what you sowed.
Russian troll? On Trumps nuts? Surely you jest. I don’t want a nuclear war with Russia and I didn’t vote for that babbling moron. I was responding to a troll, that is all.
I don’t want any war with Russia either but we cannot allow Russia’s puppet Assad to continue to use chemical weapons on his people.Obama didn’t attack Assad’s Air Force last time because Russia said they’d make him give up his stockpile but I guess it was all nonsense because look another chemical bomb dropped from his warplanes. The rebels don’t have an airforce they aren’t flying jets barrel bombing Damascus and I already know some moron is gonna try and make some buckshot up about it being staged like they always do.It’s always the same.If all Russia can muster is that tired ole Nuclear war threat than so be it.Just remember an attack on one NATO country is an attack on all NATO countries and last time I checked militarily Russia was surrounded with four NATO battalions on its doorsteps.Use that nuclear rhetoric wisely I already told y’all about watching what you wish for…USA
You are a loon.
And you are scared…Don’t be scared now.Who helped get a thin skinned attention craving easily influenced billionaire into office what could possibly go wrong???Hahaha me personally I wanted Hillary but now that I see how Trump makes you weakling ‘s squirm I’m loving it…
If Hillary had wo we’d be in the exact same situation we are in right now. I voted for an actual anti-war candidate, Jill Stein. Twice.
To me it seems like Putin got outsmarted by Trump thanks for the help now enjoy what you get in return for interfering in our elections…Dumbass…Why do you think our agencies never released info on Trump’s teams collusion with Russia. That one’s easy because they wanted him to win.Republican ‘s are the party of Reagan the party of war…Now you know
Do you really think Assad is that stupid? Why would he use chemical weapons knowing he’d get blamed for them, especially at a point where he has the upper hand in the civil war? And your point about NATO being on Russia’s doorstep kind of makes whatever Putin does to be justifiable. It isn’t Putin who will be the cause of the nuclear war, it will be us.
Ayn Rand did say one thing useful. “Who profits: who pays?”
Neither the Russians nor the Syrian Government could profit from using chemical weapons. Certainly an intelligent person would understand this. So let’s find the source of the chemicals BEFORE we damage our credibility further.
I’m not sure if it can be damaged any further; the MSM and bought politicians would be all over Trump if he didn’t bark and we all know it.
Most intelligent people know what’s going on; its just a matter of who’s side of right and wrong they’re banking on.
Anti-Trumpism is packaged by the MSM as the right thing to do even though it makes no objective sense and Trump’s core promises – getting along with Russia, rebuilding the domestic civilian economy, make a lot of sense.
Trump’s polarizing personality is a mixed blessing. It got his platform into the White House but obscures that at the same time. There’s no way welfare-warfare statists want their game to end.
Anyone at this point in time who actually believes the media/government narrative on ANYTHING is an unmitigated fool! Why in the world would Syria use chemical weapons when they know full well that the Western nations trying to overthrow Assad would JUMP on such an action. We are expected to believe that Assad and all the “enemies” of the USA are THAT stupid!
Sarin is easily traced. So Trump should hold on to his shorts as there is mounting evidence emerging that this was another easily traced rebel false flag operation. Rebels were reportedly issued gas masks in the area and warned to be prepared for an attack.
You see I don’t believe Assad used the gas last time so I was happy Obama did not Bomb Assad . I don’t even think Assad used the gas this time . I think the same terrorist we helped in Kosovo , Bosnia , Egypt , Libya and Syria used the gas and crossed Obama’s red line . Republican don’t seem to care who crossed Obama’s red line they want to bomb Assad . Now they think Trump is going to do what they wanted Obama to do . Russia says Assad probably did not do this . I believe Russia because I think these same Muslims deliberately bombed their own people in both Kosovo and Bosnia . They will do anything to win . If Trump bombs Assad he will be worse than Obama ..Obama asked congress and congress said no .
It looks to me like Trump is already little more than a figurehead in his own administration which is taking the form of a regency. The foreign policy show is for all intents and purposes being run by Pence, McMaster & Mattis who are staunch defenders of the general foreign policy direction of the previous 4 administrations.
I suspect the mutinies, selective leaks and media lynchings have been a lesson by the Deep State to show Trump how much trouble they can make for him (and if need be his family) if he does not fall in line on foreign policy and “security” matters. Not to mention a message to any future presidential candidate with ideas about changing course.
I guess the swamp creatures have won. Now going to war when you promised not to would be the real reason to impeach him. The problem is that he would be replaced by another neoconservative flunky. America’s foreign policy seems to be on auto pilot and no matter who is the president the policy will not change. The only thing that will ever awaken the American public is to reinstate the draft so every family has skin in the game. Another wake up call would be a nuclear detonation on American soil but then it will be too late.
Same old story, make a preposterous assertion unburdened by evidence, repeat it constantly for a few days and then start fulminating about red lines crossed. Apparently, our fellow citizens have an unlimited tolerance for this sort of transparent fraud. We must be mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed manure.
Trump is a charlatan .He will do nothing but clouds of stinky hot air.Trump historic role was to stop crazy Hillary.
Commentary on the Syrian Chemical Attack False Flag
http://www.newnationalist.net/2017/04/05/commentary-on-the-syriann-chemical-attack-false-flag/
Hey, 2003 called. Neocons want their foreign policy back. Trump obliges.
Even *IF* it were 100% proven that the Syrian government used chemical weapons, so what? International law and norms of armed conflict are being routinely ignored in this undeclared war. Regarding precedent of the US position towards the use of chemical weapons, consider the Halabja attack by Saddam Hussein against Iranian forces and uncooperative Iraqi citizens alike – the largest chemical weapons attack directed against a civilian-populated area in history. That atrocity didn’t end US military support for Saddam Hussein. The US desire to support aggression against Iran and suppression of Iraqi self-determination was more important than condemning the use of chemical weapons, the precursors of which the US actually supplied, in part.
Sounds like the neocons have Trump firmly by the short ones. Didn’t take long. Of course surrounding yourself with the bastards isn’t real bright either. Well, it was fun while it lasted.
The President is a liar and a hypocrite. THE UNITED STATES would appear destined for martial law and obliteration. It’s time to leave while you still can.
Where can we flee to? Liechtenstein seems the best place to me, but their immigration laws are so strict I couldn’t get in unless I had a job there waiting for me.
So Trump going to turn into Hillary after all?
Syria has become an opportunity for Trump with both major parties ready for the conquest of Syria.
And Raimondo continues to support Trump.
And even Thomas Knapp is buying into the Susan Rice theories, which are meant to take the heat off Trump.
The antiwar message has become so garbled on this site now that it’s not worth reading anymore.
Along with some really novel ideas coming from Trump’s supporters that Trump has somehow been forced into taking a position against Syria.
Of course the gas attack was a setup and there’s already a good amount of evidence to say it was. Not to even have to mention that Trump sent US troops into Syria to establish a solid presense in order to prevent a standoff by Russia in defence of Syria’s legitimate government.
Don, give it a rest!
