Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D – HI) continues to be pilloried by Congressional hawks from both parties over her visit to Syria last week, with a number of representatives declaring the very idea of going to Syria and talking peace “reprehensible,” with one Congressional aide quoted claiming there was widespread “disgust” over the visit.
Gabbard’s 7-day visit, as part of a delegation which also included former Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D – OH), was sponsored by the Ohio-based Arab American Community Center for Economic and Social Services. Congressional officials have been quick to insist she wasn’t sent as part of any official Congressional delegation, though it is routine for Congressmen to take trips abroad funded by private groups.
Gabbard has long criticized the US arms smuggling operation to back Syrian rebel factions, noting a lot of the weapons end up with terrorists, and trying to ban the practice. President Trump is said to be opposed to the CIA smuggling program too, and he and Gabbard met shortly after the election.
Since Gabbard and Trump both have similar positions, there has been some speculation the visit was an unofficial one by the Trump Administration to test the waters. One Congressional aide was quoted declaring Gabbard’s position against arming terrorists as something you’d hear on Russian state media.
Most of the efforts to attack Gabbard for visiting Syria, and talking with President Assad about the possibility of peace, center on nothing specific that Gabbard did, as it doesn’t appear she violated any laws or even political norms in doing so. Rather, most seem to object to Gabbard’s support for peace in Syria at all, with multiple Congressional officials including in their comments demands for regime change in Syria as a precondition to peace.
Maybe The hawks don’t support her but I sure do , and I think Trump does too
Ya think?
It’s not often I stoop to answering your idiocy but this time it just grabbed me.
(note the 9 suckers who went for it)
Trump supports Tulsi? Are you kidding or is it just an alternate fact?
Once again congress is horrified that the truth might be revealed. Sick bastards.
Tulsi Gabbard is the best and most decent person currently serving in the U.S. Congress.
And the most unpopular in the US congress regarding the question of Syria.
Please don’t anybody mistake my words as condemnation of the woman, because it’s not. It’s meant as condemnation of the American people.
luv from Canada.
p.s. maybe likewise of the Canadian people if the question was raised?
Let us hope that Gabbard’s Hawaii district will not be attacked by AIPAC funds or “redistricted”, as were those of McKinney and Kucinich. The political rot in Congress is “disgusted”? Don’t the swine know they enjoy a national approval rate of thirteen percent? When will the day finally come when that house of prostitution is fumigated?
It would be difficult to redistrict Gabbard. Hawaii only has two districts and the state is so heavily Democratic that even extreme gerrymandering couldn’t turn one Republican. Furthermore, the legislature, which would have to do the redistricting, is almost entirely Democratic (45 of 51 state representatives, 25 of 25 state senators). Kucinich and McKinney were both redistricted into oblivion by Republican legislatures.
It’s possible that Gabbard could be opposed in her next primary, but if so, 0% of her opponent’s funds would come from AIPAC, since AIPAC does not make political campaign contributions.
That AIPAC does not make political contributions (or cause them to be made) is news to me.
AIPAC channels millions of dollars in campaign contributions to candidates for federal office through a network of political action committees established throughout the United States by members of AIPAC’s national board of directors.
Of course it does. Why would anyone even try to point out the technical distinctions on whether it is at arm’s length?
AIPAC does not make political contributions.
Obviously AIPAC encourages, promotes, suggests, etc. political contributions from its members and supporters.
There’s a difference.
I’m as opposed to AIPAC as anyone. While telling the truth about AIPAC is not necessarily an effective way of fighting it, making shit up about AIPAC isn’t either.
She has pulled off a stunt that is going to be seen as hugely unpopular with the American people. Her constituents will likely be not much different.
She’s a traitor to her country and a loose cannon in the Dem party. She’s worse than Obama even though her contribution will be much less worthwhile to the cause of stopping the ongoing war in Syria.
In fairness to those few who are fawning all over her efforts, let’s give it some time to see how she makes out. LOL
The traitors in Congress are the ones who support the apartheid state of Israel.
How are the American people taking what she did Edith?
As is Don. You are spot on Edith.
The only people who are affected by Gabbard are the scum rats in DC who should all be sent into Syria where they can fight along side their terrorist friends like Al Nusra.
“She has pulled off a stunt that is going to be seen as hugely unpopular with the American people.”
There are 100+ flavors of Americans. I am happy Gabbard chose to go. I think that many other Americans are also happy she isn’t being a status quo Democrat.
If only she hadn’t made the mistake of confusing Islamic terrorists with Islam. Only stupid people made that mistake and it was only done to oppose Obama. (culuh)
Wasn’t it obvious that the whole point was to not orient the entire Muslim world against the US, which would result in even more reasons for them to seek revenge. Couldn’t Americans at least put away their guns long enough to understand that you don’t go out searching to make new enemies.
If Tulsi gets it on Syria then why didn’t she get it on that too?
The only reason I can imagine is that she wanted to get her name in lights and she couldn’t come up with any respectable way to do it. Those Dems iin Hawaii aren’t going to forgive her for that one.
agree?
She has been actually the only member of Congress to understand the whole situation in Syria unlike the echo chamber of sycophants in DC.
Why not accept that Gabbard did it for the reasons she stated she did it? She will clearly be targeted by some but whether some equals any large chunk of votes in her district is a question with an uncertain answer. I think that the Democrat Party orthodoxy certainly will not approve of her actions but as a former Vice Chair of the Democrat Party they might not be able to burn her picture in effigy quite yet.
Right, she must then also be a Kremlin employee, how dare an American politician talk about peace.
Americans, have you ever heard the like of this? (Canada’s National Post)
http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world/congresswoman-defends-meeting-assad-in-syria-says-u-s-engaged-in-counterproductive-regime-change-war
Just when you think you’ve heard the most outrageous comment, it smacks ya down again. And again! And fwiw, and for those who don’t know, this newspaper is Canada’s worst rabid right warmonger we’ve got.
Note the stock photo that’s grabbed from last September, and says so. It’s a lesson for Ditz on how to do it.
All I’ve been able to find so far is a weak attempt to cover this by Huffpost. Is there any other US paper of website that has the balls to go this far?
luv from Canada.
I love the title. I wonder if Justin Raimondo can square Trump’s quote with the point made in the article.

Great video! http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2017/01/25/the-lead-tulsi-gabbard.cnn
Skip the first 30 seconds of propaganda. The way she answers the questions tells us that this is one smart woman. And pretty enough to go a long way in politics which is a prerequisite.
Good people who are truly antiwar don’t let this kind of an opportunity slip away. A whole new attitude could be built on this sort of truthfulness on Syria and breaking through the lies.
They attack her for speaking to the real moderate in Syria while applaud McCain, Graham, et al speaking with real jihadi terrorists in Syria. Go figure.
