Fighting continued at several locations inside the Nusra Front-held eastern half of the Syrian city of Aleppo, as the military tried to expel the Islamist rebels from key neighborhoods. Airstrikes were also reported, as the Syrian government made a surprise offer of safe passage if the rebels flee.
An official statement released on Syrian state media and made on behalf of both the Syrian and Russian governments offered all armed rebel factions inside eastern Aleppo safe passage as well as “aid as necessary” if they agreed to leave the city “and let civilian residents live their normal lives.”
This is not totally without precedent. Throughout the Syrian Civil War the government has on several occasions made such deals to secure the recovery of important neighborhoods or districts within cities, at times even busing the rebels out of the area and into other rebel territory.
That it’s being raised as a possibility in Aleppo, however, is a surprise, both because the fighting there has been extremely fierce, with no sign that any backdoor deals are likely to be accepted, and because the Syrian military has repeatedly claimed recently that they are on the verge of a total military victory in the city.
Still, the civilian toll of fighting in Aleppo is substantial, and resolving the fighting without further bloodshed would be a major win for the Syrian government on the international stage, as well as a blow to US and other Western officials who are presenting the Syrian government and its Russian allies as brutal savages looking to kill as many people as possible in the city.
It will gain them nothing on the international stage, as it will be ignored by the corporate media. It will, however, win considerable good will for the government among Syrians.
“International stage”…you mean the Westernaganda? When the Syrian government had offered the same to terrorists in Damascus suburbs a month ago, and they’d taken up the offer, America condemned it.
My use of the term “International stage” was a reference to the appropriate sentence in the article. I suppose I could have put it in quotes as you did, but I think my intent was quite clear through my use of the term “corporate media.”
What world stage? The good chunk of the world that knows what is going on need not be educated, and those in the West that are under media propaganda — will not report it anyway.
By the way, I notice that antiwar now calls the Syrian government by its proper name; a year ago Thomas Knapp would’ve been here eagerly claiming that there’s no such thing as a “legitimate” government in Syria. Given up the attempt, Knapp?
I’m not sure what “attempt” you’re talking about. I’m still here. I’m still claiming there’s no such thing as a “legitimate government” in Syria — or anywhere else. And I still don’t control Antiwar.com’s writers or editorial policy.
Well, you’ll have a ringside view as the allegedly illegitimate government of Syria proves that it is, actually, the legitimate and proper government of Syria.
I’m glad you’re around. Would hate to have you miss out.
What happened to my last comment this censorship I mean modernisation has to stop. What in that comment was offensive. If the people running this site don’t want pro America comments just say it and I’ll never comment again.
“The people running this site don’t want pro America comments.”

What happened to your last comment was that it got caught in our automated filters for some reason and I approved it once I saw it and realized that it shouldn’t be there.
This has been explained to you before. Pray stop pretending you’re some kind of victim. That’s a practice that results in only two possible responses on the part of the non-whiners here . One is boredom. The other is irritation. No, the moderation doesn’t have to stop. We moderate. You don’t have to like it. That’s how it is whether you like it or not.
We do allow pro-America comments. We also allow your anti-America trash.
Thanks Mr.knapp for allowing me to express my opinion
Eagle if you should feel like you are very pro American and most of us on this site like my self are anti war . Yes according to our last three federal administrations you do fit right in as a American .. And I guess by the way I believe the wars have been going , I also might be anti American . If being Anti war is Anti American which sounds like the way you think . I sure don’t like your thinking any better than I have liked the last three federal governments the United States has had .
Well thanx for being so diplomatic about it I respect your opinion as long as I’m not attacked for mine cause some people will troll your comments and say hateful things I appreciate your perspective even if I don’t agree…We’re all in this together and in the end if a foreign country ever decided to try to invade I’d use the good ole 2nd amendment And the freedoms that were given to me by the sacrifice of so many brave men and women to help any one of my fellow Americans…Take care
Nice fantasies. Fantasies keep you warm and fuzzy.
No your momma keeps me warm and fuzzy …Make smart ass comments get a smart ass response…no need to act brave over the computer save it for someone you can see and can touch…
Knowing my mum, my sympathies are entirely with you. You’ll need all the help you’ll get.
Note that just Friday, Russia and Syria offered a UNSCR calling for safe passage for terrorists who wish to leave E. Aleppo. It was rejected by the West, which prefers a bloodbath in E. Aleppo rather than surrender.
