While the results of last night’s Brexit referendum put a square majority of voters in favor of leaving the European Union, the vote split starkly across geographic regions, with Northern Ireland and every single district in Scotland voting decisively to stay. Ultimately it was England and Wales that carried the night.
That’s not necessarily the end of things, however, with Scotland’s First Minister calling the Brexit referendum “democratically unacceptable,” and vowing that the Scottish government would immediately move toward another independence referendum.
Scottish independence lost a vote in 2014, but at the time the narrative was that voting to remain within the UK was vital to staying in the EU, with the corollary that Britain might not let an independent Scotland into the EU. That argument was seen as a major centerpiece of the anti-independence movement. Just a year and a half later, remaining part of the UK has meant Scotland being dragged out of the EU against its will, and with the belief that Scotland was sold a bill of goods, the SNP is pushing to re-do the referendum on the basis of the new reality.
Northern Ireland might not be far behind, with the major Sinn Fein party calling for a vote within the region to withdraw from the United Kingdom and unite with EU member Ireland,. a long-time ambition for many in Northern Ireland at any rate.
Even tiny Gibraltar, which voted over 95% to remain in the EU, might be up for grabs, with Spain pushing for Britain to allow joint control of the tiny region as a way to keep the rock within the European Union’s economy.
” …another independence referendum…”
Unlike the UK, Scotland does not have its own currency. If they leave Britain and join the EU, they will have to use the euro which is likely to collapse along with the EU before the Scots have a chance to vote. Scotland is also counting on $50 oil lasting (it won’t). But good luck to them. England (with Wales) will also get independence from the UK and keep their culture, even if they never become an empire again.
Wooten you are so right. The Scots, even though I believe they were cheated out of their secssion vote would not survive, especially under the SNP (in or out of the EU). SNP has pretty hard left policies. Under a fiscally conservative government they could probably be relatively successful. Northern Ireland – another basket case. As an independent NI –would be an economic powerhouse —just like Botswana (lol) What the hell are those Sinn Fein folks smoking? For 30 years they fought the British and they are so willing to be slaves to the EU. Again, Sinn Fein is socialistic in its outlook. Northern Ireland is not ready to be joined to the 26 counties –number #1 the celtic tiger has been dead for a while. –plus things are too fresh historically in NI — They would succeed in a united Ireland if the gov’t pursued a freer economic libertarian model. They would have to have some kind of special relationship with Britain.
So now Scotland wants independence from London so it can stay in the EU? Good grief, the EU is the modern Titanic, and Brexit is the modern iceberg. Socialism has driven the Scots totally bat-manure crazy. William Wallace would be disgusted with them.
The Welsh deserve there independence too. I say we smash all these countries as small as possible and then erase the borders minus the EU superstate. The only free people are a stateless people. Make these states small enough to fit in your pocket then walk away. The Scots, the Welsh, the Irish, the Catalans, the Basque, the Flemish, the Corsicans, I support em all. Lets reduce Europe to cracker crumbs and start over. Lets do the same back here in the States too!
Brexit is the end of the European Union.
Will England have their bloodthirsty Lincoln now, to “preserve the union?”

Remain” or “Leave”? What does the UK’s EU Referendum—scheduled 23rd June—really amount to? Is it simply the opportunity for UK citizens to decide if Britain should stay in the European Union? Or is it something of greater significance, with broader and more serious implications? And just what is this thing called the EU anyway?

Okay, so Scotland and Ireland make a break with Britain- so? Aren’t we champions of the ‘little guy trying to be free’? It’s none of our business if Scotland sticks with Britain or not- it’s entirely their decision. If we don’t like what they choose, we don’t have to do business with them- if it’s cool, we trade with them. But everyone needs to calm down first- England isn’t going to sink into the sea any time soon, so let things shake out and see what happens before we have a collective panic attack. Personally, I see it as democracy in action.
Can’t the queen do anything? What do you guys pay her for, anyhow?
This is exactly what I was hoping for. Brexit may do us the double-favor of smashing both the EU and the Crown. I hate the EU but I’ve been fighting for Scottish Independence and Irish Reunification all my life. Even if there doing it for all the wrong reasons, Scottish independence and Irish Republicanism are a good thing. Throw off the shackles of the UK first. The EU is a sinking ship anyway and my folks back in the old country know how to swim.
