Speaking to a number of Congressional Democrats today, President Obama sought to sell the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran on the idea that the US will remain hostile toward Iran irrespective of the deal, and that it simply means Iran won’t have nuclear arms during that hostility.
Obama is said to have told the Congressmen that Iran remains “odious” in his eyes, and “we’re still going to fight them at a lot of different levels.” Several of them expressed outrage, however, that Obama is still backing the nuclear deal despite opposition from Congressional leaders.
Overwhelmingly, Republicans in Congress are expected to oppose the deal, but they will also need considerable numbers of Democrats to come along to get enough votes to actually kill the pact. That is still seen as extremely unlikely, despite massive Israeli lobbying efforts.
The White House has repeatedly warned that killing the deal won’t mean going back to the pre-deal status quo of international sanctions and Iranian isolation, warning that the other countries in the P5+1 won’t simply go along with the US Congress on the matter.
Odious? Guaranteed that the smell comes from Washington.
…and Tel Aviv.
You either extend your hands in friendship, or stop pointing the gun…
you can't do both.
Actually, technically you can extend one hand in friendship while holding the gun in the other. The statements coming from the leadership of both countries seems to indicate that this is what they are attempting.
truly sickening1 Imagine if Rouhani said this. the howls of outrage from the pollies and their media would have been deafening and a super majority in the pointless US govt review would have appeared instantly.
Well, similar statements have come from Ayatollah Khameini that Iran will continue to be hostile to the US and Israel. And, no, I don't mean the lie Netanyahu constructed from an out of context quote about what the nuke deal means, so don't bring it up in replying to me.
The nuke deal staves off a potential US attack on Iran, which obviously benefits Iran. From the US point of view, it removes a phony pretext behind which Washington can be pressured into attacking Iran by Israeli and Saudi operatives. It's not an olive branch, just a gradual turning the muzzles of the guns away from one another.
Can someone explain to me what the point is of casting Iran as the 'enemy of the day'? Iran has not invaded another country in the last 100 Years, which is more than can be said for other countries in the region.
O I L
more like the past 200 years.
Actually, 40 years — Iran invaded Iraq in 1975, occupying part of the north for several months to suppress Kurdish cross-border raids.
Today Obama traded missiles for $5.4 billion of Saudi crude oil, all so that the Saudi Arabia War on harmless Yemen may continue. Think about it, missiles that cost our corporate rich only $1 million to mass produce, they get $5.4 billion worth of natural resources in a trade that Iran has the potential of bringing such corruption to a screeching halt. For the danger of a good and moral example, that is the pleasing aroma that our Empire finds so ‘odious.’
What a wanker; He can't do one thing right wo screwing it up.
That's why it's called the Wanker House.
"Speaking to a number of congressional democrats…"
Shouldn't that read dual-citizen zionists?
