US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro today warned that the US would consider “other steps” in support of the peace process in the region if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains opposed to Palestinian statehood.
Shapiro, who made the comments on Israeli radio, said it might well be impossible for a peace deal to be reached as long as Netanyahu remains in power, but that the US would continue to try to move in the direction of the two-state solution .
Though unspoken, the implication is likely a change in US policy at the UN Security Council, and the end to long-standing US pledges to veto any UN moves to recognize Palestine.
This talk of a shifting US policy in UN has led to a rather unusual threat from Sen. John McCain (R – AZ) to see the UN defunded if the US votes in favor of Palestine there. Though Republicans are often threatening to defund the UN, it is usually based on something the UN might do, as opposed to something the Obama Administration might do.
So the wolf has shed his sheep skin.
I wish John the traitor McCain would fall into a 6 foot hole…
Problem with Boom-Boom McCain (to steal a line from LBJ) is that he crashed too many airplanes without wearing a flight helmet.
Go ahead and defund the UN. Why should China, Russia, and 3 parasites have veto power?
Thats Right! The UN should only give veto power to the Clintons and the Bushes.
Clown!
because we're not the boss of the world?
And this means exactly what? If the US defunds the UN, other nations will foot the bill- and if it means the US doesn't pay to play, the US gives up its seat on the Security Council. McCain is basically threatening to throw away the US seat on the Security Council, which means we have no veto power over any UNSC resolution or sanction against Israel. You lost your bid as a presidential hopeful, John, and all you can do now is stir up trouble- maybe we should start referring to you as McCain't.
Best news heard yet.
Caesar, I'm not so sure that US defunding of the UN has any effect on US membership in or veto on the Security Council. Now, I don't mean to criticize the intent of your post, but I'm just not sure you've got the law right. I think the US in fact _can_ defund the UN without losing its Security Council membership or veto (although the US vote in the General Assembly might be lost, but that's unrelated to the Security Council and the General Assembly vote is worthless anyway).
I could be wrong on this and I'd welcome anyone's correcting me if you could point out some precise legal authority on this point. But I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm right.
Good, but also take those steps.
christen some navy ship the uss liberty and have it deliver supplies to gaza.
nice one. I doubt McCain would see the irony.
It gets even better. It was McCain's daddy who whitewashed the USS Liberty attack: Now that is irony!

The UN has never been anything other than a convenient tool used by the US, England, and Israel to block or prevent actions or resolutions that might interfere with Western plans to rule the world by military force.
And to think that McCain was a Presidential candidate in 2008!
Cut off UN funding, invasion of Iraq, war with Iran; when the history of the USA is written, no one will believe the level of control exercised over this country by israel and its friends here.
I am so tired of John McCain. He should retire and STFU
Ronald Reagan wanted for UN to be removed from NY, Bush regime questioned the UN founding, McCain is yet another drifter jumping from wagon to wagon not knowing where the train we'll take him, that's because his listening to jumping jack flash and maxwell jump songs while playing poker in senate hearing sessions, he still don't get it.
So apparently, the one time it's okay to support warlike actions against a country is when it is Israel. No sanctions no war against any country except when it's Israel. I'm glad I'm consistent. No war or violence against any country, even if a certain country has a bunch of Jews in it.
