Months of on-again, off-again ceasefires seem to have been ditched in Ukraine today, as the nation’s army announced a “full-scale offensive” against the rebel east, pushing against both Donetsk and Luhansk.
The move was not unexpected, as the fighting over the Donetsk airport has picked up in recent days. Now, both sides claim to hold the airport, which is all-but-destroyed at any rate, and dozens have been reported killed across the region.
After Western protesters ousted the pro-Russian government in Kiev early in 2014, the new government imposed strict restrictions on the ethnic-Russian dominated east, which fueled a rebellion which has kept much of the easternmost oblasts independent to this day.
A ceasefire was negotiated in Minsk which kept the two sides from fighting, but promised reforms from the Ukrainian government to reintegrate the east never came about. Now, it seems they’re once again trying to reintegrate militarily.
It is not a surprise. For a long time the party of war in Kiev has clearly said that they will receive new arms and reattack again.USA are pushing for it
Alex is right, I can add that new wave of mobilization was annonced today /4th!!!/ . Men aged 18-50 for endless wars of aggression. Just like from IDF books, Israels style: Commit murder and aggression and blame victim…When peace could be achived, wage another attack…
US and West try so hard involve Russia, that all kinds of crimes against humanity are allowed…Angry Russia has to hold back – for now…Pedro CR
Why does Russia have to hold back? They should intervene on humanitarian grounds to prevent the ethnic cleansing and genocide proposed by Porochenko and the regime in Kiev. Their support for war crimes is far more open than Gaddafi's ever was, but then the hypocrites in Washington, London and Paris will veto any response.
Russia should just shut off the gas – see how long it takes the Ukrainians (and the EU) to realize how big a mistake they made. If it comes down to supporting the right wing nationalists in Kiev or staying warm this winter (colder than usually this year) I'm betting on staying warm. Strictly a business decision, of course.
