A big push over the weekend to close the gap on the Iran nuclear deal with the P5+1 has made progress, but with the deadline now 24 hours away there seems to be no chance of finalizing everything by then.
This is leading where everyone figured it would, to talks about a possible extension of the deadline, something both sides insisted before wouldn’t be considered at all.
The threat of the incoming US Senate giving itself veto power over the deal in January does somewhat limit how long the extension can practically be for, but there seems to be little reason to give up before then.
There doesn’t seem to be much alternative to reaching a deal for most officials involved, as the only plan B is to go back to open-ended threats against Iran, which didn’t accomplish anything.
