Top State Department officials Julieta Valis Noyes, discussing the US concerns with ISIS oil revenue, has revealed that the administration considers attacking oil pipelines in Syria a “viable” military option.
US warplanes have been attacking oil refineries and whatnot in ISIS territory in Syria, but attacking pipelines outright would be a huge move, with analysts warning the precedent it sets would be horrible.
Strikes on oil pipelines in Syria would risk huge environment damage and massive civilian casualties across the ISIS-held territory, which would be a huge embarrassment for the US, and would also give various factions all the more excuse to attack pipelines themselves.
Economic warfare already threatens to cause significant civilian suffering, something the US seems to be comfortable with right now, but escalating it could make the problem far, far worse.
This FILTHY IDEA 'IS' a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY..PERIOD!
The ghouls are in charge at the White House.
Hmmm…interesting. I doubt this will happen…at least based on this article in Slate from 2006 http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/e…
With ISIS's start with U.S. help, could Israel be far behind? With all the rhetoric that Islamist hate "the Jews" why is it they never get around to attacking Tel Aviv?
To even consider doing something like this is pure insanity. Don't these halfwits understand that once this Pandora's Box is opened EVERY pipeline in the world becomes a target. And there is no way the USG could ever protect every mile of every pipeline within the US borders. The fears of a pipeline break along the Keystone Pipeline would be realized quickly – along with the verification that the oil companies and the states who've granted right-of-way are woefully unprepared, despite assurances to the contrary, for a major pipeline break on the plains of Nebraska.
"Economic warfare already threatens to cause significant civilian suffering, something the US seems to be comfortable with right now."
Yes, the Germans in 1919 would have had plenty to say about the moral aspects of the Hunger Blockade and the "comfort" with which the Anglo-American elites kept it up after hostilities had ceased with the so-called Armistice. This is the policy background that at length sprouted Madeleine "500,000 dead Iraqi children are worth it" Albright.
Gas prices are down. Time to bomb more pipelines and more oil producing regions.
At least that would help prop up oil prices for the rest of the world. Wonder who exactly came up with this idea? Can't have ISIS undermining OPEC, BP, Exxon, Shell, etc.
These pipelines are a threat to Saudi oil interests, they must be destroyed!
I always wondered why oil pipelines in Iraq were never attacked. If I'd been an Arab leader and they'd been after killing me to steal our oil I would have made it clear before they got me I'd set every pipeline and refinery and well on fire. Their murderous war would be for no oil booty, there'd be less oil on the market and much higher oil prices. Saddam and Gadaffi should have done it and maybe Assad will.
GREAT IDEA!! This should send oil to $150 a barrel and if we can just get other factions to home in on this "great idea," we can finally get that $300 a barrel oil that will make fracking really profitable!
Yeah and more polluted water. Thanx BUT NO THANX.
…didn't Saddam Hussein do that while withdrawing from Kuwait? …Now, in that case you could argue in more than one way that Iraq was not destroying someone else's property. But USg would be (and always was).
what goes around will come around to these delusional fools.
Those pipelines gotta end up in some country; care to guess which.
