Sunni tribal leaders have announced a tentative offer to back the incoming PM-designate Hayder Abadi, saying they want to ensure that the Abadi government will respect the rights of the nation’s Sunni Arab minority.
It goes further than that, however, as some of the Sunni leaders are pushing for Abadi to agree to a new autonomous region for the Sunnis, along the lines of what the Kurdistan Regional Government has.
The overwhelming majority of Sunni Arab territory in Iraq has already fallen to ISIS, with many locals seeing the Islamists as preferable to the Iraqi government forces when they arrived.
The ouster of PM Nouri al-Maliki has opened up an opportunity for a new rapprochement, at least that’s the hope of many on both sides, and Abadi is already reaching out to the Sunnis, promising to bridge the ever-widening sectarian divide.
Uniting Sunnis and Shi’ites is no small task, and with Abadi a member of the same Dawa Party as Maliki was, there is not much hope of that actually happening. That the Sunni tribesmen are open to the idea at all, however, suggests some growing disquiet about ISIS rule.
Some, including retired US General Jay Garner, a former occupation chief, say it’s too late to salvage a unified Iraq, and that the de facto partition is already a done deal. The Sunni Arabs, the Shi’ite Arabs, and the Kurds, all three are effectively building their own nations at this point.
The US air war is being launched with an eye on taking the Sunni territory back over for the central government. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.
Good, let see if they can mobilize Sunni Saudis/Turkish Sunni/Jordanian Sunnis and others from America, England, Sweden, Denmark and other nationality as Saudis Sunnis massacring people of Iraq and Syria. Those whom are going to start what is called caliphate, a fascistic bribed Saudis and UAE regime in 2014 with help from USG/English and EU.
It's good to see General Jay Garner still in the mix. Replacing Garner in the early stages after the invasion with John Paul Bremer and his altar-boys and altar-girls of the CPA was a disastrous mistake and a significant factor in the chaos that followed and the current collapse of Iraq as a nation.
I don't begrudge Garner his "I told you so" moment. If Joe Biden – an early supporter of partition – has the courage to second Garner's statement it would be fitting and a good move if he, Biden, has any presidential ambitions.
US air war was not launched to return the ISIS occupied territory back under Baghdad control. It was launched to "protect" Kurds in Irbil, translated, to make Kurds know that if US does not curb the ISIS dogs, they are dog meat. ISIS faked attack, and US faked defense. Now, Iraqi Kurdistan is CIA occupied territory, and Kurds ability to control their fate is zero. And Sunni leaders reportedly are feeling "growing disquiet" over ISIS rule! No way! US did not even blink when thousands of shiny new Toyotas streamed into Iraq. Not even "growing disquiet". Suddenly, Yazidis were discovered, then undiscovered, but then — they served the purpose, and off with them. Now, it is time to get the tribal Sunnis in the fold, and if the new government in Baghdad follows what empire dictates, then the Sunni tribes will get de facto autonomy, with Shia population having all the responsibility but no autonomy themselves. OR AT LEAST THAT IS THE RATHER TRANSPARENT NEOCON PLAN. But the best laid NEOCON plans always come to tears Watch another Libya in the making — but here, Iran and Turkey will have the last laugh.
