Meeting with leaders of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) today, Secretary of State John Kerry warned that the US is opposed to Kurdish secession from Iraq.
Kerry insisted he believes that Kurdish independence would “accelerate a lot of negative trends” in the region, and in Iraqi politics in particular. KRG President Massoud Barzani has been talking up secession recently, urging Kurds to take the opportunity presented by the ongoing fighting.
Kerry envisions Kurdistan staying the course and somehow “saving” Iraq from ISIS by throwing their weight behind a new US-backed “unity” government. Iraq’s State of Law Party is going to attempt to form a new government at the end of the month.
Whether the Kurds give some nominal political support to a new post-Maliki government or not, the KRG is already one foot out the door, and likely to take the disputed city of Kirkuk, since taken by KRG Peshmerga fighters, along with the rest of Kurdistan.

The Kurds have been talking secession since 2004…and the handwriting is on the wall. There is nothing Kerry can do anyway. What is he going to do…stop sending ketchup to Kirkuk? The US started the slide down this slope when they invaded Iraq in 2003. The complete dissolution of the state of Iraq was predetermined – and long. long overdue (since the end of WWI.)

Turkey is a U.S. ally helping the mercenaries attack Syria, who are now attacking the Maliki government who said to the U.S. "get out and stay out." ISIL is the U.S.'s way of saying "we're not taking that from you." Kurdish secession would embolden Kurds in Turkey to do the same. The U.S. can't have that unwanted wrinkle in their plans.
The Kurds have been talking secession since 1932. It's embarrassing to have a pompous "know-it-all" like Kerry that actually knows nothing at all representing us on the world stage. Long-windedness does absolutely nothing to conceal crude ignorance.

As part of Iraq or as an independent region, the Kurds will defend their territory against invading ISIS forces. Kerry's threats only demonstrate what an utterly clueless clown he is.

Massoud Barzani gets his order from Scandinavia where he have a good oil business relation with Norwegian. For him Iraq means nothing, for him having his own Kurdistan, being the king of Kurdistan betraying the Iraqi people is more important then the unity of Iraq. Like Jalal talabani and other Kurdish social democrats or liberals his just another opportunist Kurdish king.
There is not and never has been any "unity of Iraq."

Iraq has never been held together other than by an iron authoritarian fist. Absent such a fist, it breaks down into Kurds who want their Greater Kurdistan, Shiites who would comfortably accede to being part of a Greater Iran, and Sunni Arabs who are split between Islamism and Ba'athism/Nasserism. Those four groups never have reached and never will reach any kind of lasting voluntary political accommodation.
I don't agree with Biden that Iraq should "be partitioned," because that implies an outside authority once again making decisions for the people in question. But left alone, Iraq would most certainly partition itself.
That we all know, I mean those of us who knows the history of Middle East and English colonialism so as USG hegemony and their past and present plans for Middle East. We also know that it was the English in 1920s which took away part of Iraq, present Kuwait, and give it to Sabah family who become the Amir of Kuwait and her daughter on behalf of though Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz lied to US senate, we also know that it was US ambassador to Iraq who lied to Iraqi iron fist, Saddam Hussein, that "the problem between Kuwaiti stealing Iraqi oil have nothing to do with USG". To stop all that colorful lies by the west from Churchill time to Tehran conference and beyond, to stop all that falsified democracy presented in last decade by English and USG, to stop all that killings and committed war crimes by the USG-EU, therefore it is time for the people of Iraq, Iran, Syria, Jordan and even Turkey to unite and once and for all kick the asses of these nothing but falsified democracy's out of Middle East, while at it they can take their bulldogs and savages with them and shove them where they belong.
Far from accelerating "negative trends", Kurdish secession might actually alleviate them, by reducing ethnic and cultural tensions, in what is essentially a non-historic state. In simplest terms, there would be one less ethnic group to quarrel with other ethnic groups. Iraq, as a country, has never worked, as anyone with half a brain can clearly see.
On his seemingly endless missions to the middle east, Kerry talks to the people who live there like they are in kindergarten. They should advise him to leave and not come back. Then unceremoniously kick him out of the country
