Documents from the Canadian government show that the nation’s military and diplomats have been secretly working on plans to invade Syria for quite some time, cobbling together five distinct scenarios that they could use to justify such an attack.
Canadian officials have publicly insisted for months they have “no plans” to be brought into the Syrian Civil War, but the internal documents, classified and heavily redacted, detail preparations for both an intervention and a long-term presence to back pro-West rebels as an alternative to al-Qaeda.
Canada has no history of unilateral interventions of this sort, so it is likely that the planning presumes the nation getting sucked into a war in Syria as some part of a NATO occupation, though the redactions in the documents make it entirely unclear.
The preparations also reveal that Canada has been working at training myriad rebel factions in “leadership skills” in anticipation of eventually backing them as a new government.
Harper and his Neonons gonna show those Russians and Hesbolah……… Those soft Russians and sleepy Hesbolah will be out gunned by those battle hardened Canadians…… Sounds like a bad Television script….. Makes one wonder if there sre any Canadians still in Canada…… ?????????/
Canada is planning to invade Syria? Oh holy crap-on-a-crisp, that's about the funniest thing i've heard about all day. I can't wait to see Harper's All Canada Brigade of Withering Mooseheads Melt In The Heat Of Syria. Canada eh…
I hope they're working through the details carefully, because certain holes in the plan would become evident very quickly. First, logistics- how on earth would we supply troops in Syria? Through Cyprus? Greece? Turkey? We have no particular relations with any of these countries, surely none strong enough for us to assume they would grant basing rights for a shooting operation. Second, even with an available forward base, how would we actually get supplies into the theatre? One of our only supply ships just burnt up. We have what- one other? Third, is the Air Force up to the task of defending a Canadian incursion? Our F-18s are pretty much the same vintage as Syria's better Migs, and we would probably only be able to send the usual six or so we have for these sorts of events, as we did for Libya. How long would they last against those Mig-29s?
I hope any professional summarizing these questions would finish by pointing out to the political masters what should have been obvious from the outset: this is a completely, utterly insane idea, from start to finish.
However, knowing our government, I am sure that the report is accurate and that this is something they are seriously considering. Unless they choose to invade Ukraine first.
Not in my name Mr. Harper! You can lick emperor's boots or booty as you do already with so much zest, but this is totally another matter. You and your minions have been making such a bad name for Canada it will take years to repair. Now you are ready to make Canada a joke of the whole world?
This joker is wild.
Dear God – Hasn't Canada become such a weird place compared to the respected nation it was even 20 yrs ago. A million miles from the Trudeau era – you'd wonder if it's the same country even. Sweden has similarly degenerated. Did these places undergo a "colour revolution" or some other kind of regime change we dont know about?
nope…just the elevation of the rightwingers who believe, heart and soul (if they had one), that they are special and exceptional and therefore can never be wrong. Plus, they didn't want to be labeled as being independent of the rogue nation to their south…you know, "you're with us, or agin' us."
Caught the war fever from south of the border, eh?
Well, I suppose that if the Canadians can have a crackhead Mayor of their largest city that anything is possible.
Wasn't there a movie about Canada starting a war with another country? Wasn't it also a – comedy, a spoof?
Canada attacking Syria, HAHAHAHAHAHA and another HA.
Are they gonna use their horse mounted troops? Its a long way to Syria for the posse.
Jason Ditz states "Canada has no history of unilateral interventions", but Canada has never had a Prime Minister like Harper. Stephen Harper is a war monger.
It has to be the fumes from the tar sands. Nothing else makes sense.
Why ? What vital canadian interests are there to get involved ? I can only think of one (real) reason, but that's not really a vital interest for the canadian people.
