Ukraine’s Interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk is, as ever, outraged at the Russian government, declaring the announcement of a massive price increase by Russia’s Gazprom “absolutely unacceptable.”
The Gazprom increase amounts to roughly 80% over the previous year’s costs, and Yatsenyuk insisted there was “no reason” other than politics for the company to impose such an increase.
The reality, however, is that Gazprom had been providing gas to Ukraine at an enormous discount during the Yanukovych government, and the ouster of the pro-Russian president and his replacement with a pro-West faction gave Gazprom an excuse to ditch the discount.
Gazprom had already shaved off part of the discount last month, citing Ukraine’s unpaid gas bills, and today brought it up to $485 per 1,000 cubic meters, virtually the same price they charge Germany.
Ukraine officials are calling “emergency talks” with the European Union trying to get them to start ponying up heavily subsidized natural gas to replace Gazprom. Some countries may be willing to do so on a limited basis, but with so many of them similarly on the hook to Gazprom for much of their supply, it is unlikely the EU is going to willingly provide such discounts to Ukraine in the long run.
The White House was critical of the Gazprom price increase, calling it “coercive” and demanding that the markets be allowed to set the price of natural gas. The White House was not questioned on the fact that the new Gazprom price is, essentially, the same as the market price across Europe.
Well the self proclaimed government of Ukraine was paid 6 billion, by US taxpayer and EU been paying some of its "mugging money" from European tax payers, so what's the problem, for this man, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuks, is to ask more money from IMF, they gladly make sure that Ukraine going to be ruined sooner then they thought.
Going back to the whole competing offers from Russia and the EU, it was these economic issues that triggered the Ukrainian events. Now, after having told the Russians to get lost, that they wanted the deal with "the West", they (and we) are demanding that Ukraine continue to receive gas at concessionary rates? The whole point is that they just rejected exactly that. And somehow we Americans are supposed to be livid about this "great injustice."
This American is laughing his head off at the idiocy of the Ukrainians.
It will be even funnier when Monsanto takes over all the farm land. I think that is what this is all about.
By the time Ukrainians experience the fleecing Euro-capitalism is about to impose on them, Yatsenyuk's rant about Gazprom will give them little to feel righteous about. Perhaps they'll all move to Latvia to replace the thousands that have left that country in the wake of Western economic "relief".
I thought Yatzi the Nazi was all about 'free market capitalism' just like his brother in the Department Of Tie-Chewing, SackOfShitVili??? How can a born again Wealth of Nations sycophant complain about market forces? Is he a Heretic?
If I were Russia i would make it an $1000/cm3
The Ukraine Puppet Leader doesn't say they were receiving gas at discount prices off course Russia is going to ask for more money
What an absurd hypocrite the USG is.
Now they wish to dictate what price Russia can ask for its gas.
What did Ukraine expect to continue sponging on Russia whilst telling them to "go to hell" and embracing the EU?
Let them embrace the EU. The Death Embrace.
Sorry, I forgot: the south and east will join the Russian Federation as well. Pretty soon.
Yatzi the Nazi reminds me a quote from one the best TV shows ever, The Wire: 'I wouldn't wipe my ass with a Baltimore lawyer' Or in his case, a Harvard lawyer.
Lets see how long the US can piggyback ride the Ukraine.
Were I Putin or Medvedev, I'd be demanding payment IN GOLD and IN ADVANCE! Otherwise, those Ukrainain fascist and N*zi pigs can go f*ck themselves (or keep themselves warm goosestepping and Sieg Heiling).
This is past humorous. Somebody please show Mr. Obama how to get RT channel, so he will not be so uninformed. That goes for our media as well. Market prices? The gas market prices are the result of the deal that Western countries imposed upon Russia, and is related to the price of oil. The formula, that then worked in favor of the West, is not that cheap now, but neither is the oil Gazprom has actually given their customers fixed contractual prices, with periods of renegotiation, and that works IN FAVOR of all customers that are linked to Russian pipelines and Russian gas. Today, those customers if they could get gas any cheaper anywhere in the world — they would be screaming mad about contracts that tie them to higher prices. But since the long term contractual prices are much lower, they are more then happy to keep them. All European countries have their alternative "just in case" suppliers of liquified gas, that is essentially a spare tire in gas supply. Those are twice as costly as Russian gas. To make things more humorous — Ukraine now demands that Russia pay another tranche of money promised under the Yanukovic deal — so it can pay the previous gas bills! Discounted or not, Ukraine never paid bills regularly, Yanukovic quarreled and whined all the time for Russia to forgive old debts. The unpaid gas bills to Russia made many a tycoon rich in Ukraine, including gas princess, Tymoshenko. Europe should have complained all along that giving Ukraine cheaper gas was simply making theirs more expensive. One just cannot mix business and wellfare, as somebody eventually pays. In everything, from gas to trade, Ukraine has deveoloped the culture of entitlement into high art. Soviet Union is long gone — and Ukrainian politicians have been milking the brotherly nation status for much too long. Now, they want to sell off their pipelines (which Russia gave them in the first place) to Western energy majors, but want discounted Russian gas. What a logic!
OK, all the grandstanding is over finally. Everyone paying attention knew this was going to happen. So, if the EU agrees to take up the slack, how long before the rationing in Europe starts? I'm sure the citizens, say in Deutschland, are going to react vociferously in large demonstrations when they have to pay more or can't get anymore because the EU is supporting neo-Nazies in Ukraine. Yup, nothing like a riled-up street party under the Brandenburger Tor.
And, finally, "…The White House was not questioned…" Oh yeah, what a friggin' surprise…
Chocolate rations have been increased to 25 grams from 50 grams!
I don't get it, they were on the streets pushed by the west protesting Russia's influence and demanding the Russians leave them, and now they are livid the Russians are asking for a FAIR price for their gas? Let them freeze and eat raw food, they asked for it.
Not only Ukraine squandered the first tranche of $3 billion that Russia paid (buying Ukrainian bonds), but last month Yatsenyuk had the audacity to demand the second tranche of $2 bln (to pay for Russian gas purchases), claiming that his predecessor squandered or stole the first tranche.
Somehow he ignores one important point: the $15 bln loan package was offered for NOT joining the EU.
People forget that Russia is not all that rich a country. The oligarchs pillage anything that's worth having and pay very little tax. Thus, subsidising gas prices whether at home or as a prestige scheme to bamboozle people to support or even join Russia is precisely the kind of voodoo economics which brought the communists down. It couldn't last and it hasn't.
You can't make this stuff up! Arsehead Yotzoyuk is outraged that Ukraine loses preferential treatment from Russia after throwing off the "Russian yoke," wants EU to subsidize gas for Ukraine, and wants Russia to give Ukraine money so Ukraine can pay the past due Russian gas bill (and skim off a few million as the money passes through oligarchs' hands).
The "free market" economics espoused by Yatsenyuk, and neocons like Ukraine regime change architect Victoria Nuland, is only supposed to apply to those with no power. Banks, corporations, and favored states – all dear to neocon/neolib hearts – aren't supposed to actually be held to the same standards, any more than the very wealthy are constrained by law, or subject to taxes.

RICinOR, Yea, I particularly like the pictures of Victoria Nuland Kagan feeding cookies to the CIA's contracted proxy 'Secret Army' of "agent provocateurs".
Well, the west wanted the Ukraine, and now you have it suckers, warts and all (and a need to give the place cheap gas). You break it, you buy it.
This is all about eating cake and having it too. Ukraine is a white elaphant, it is better to let the riscies drain their economy over it. We are fools.
The interesting thing is that even if Europe wanted to supply cheap gas to Ukraine there is no way they could do so without substantial investment and at least a 14 month lead time. There is not enough physical reverse flow into Ukraine from North West Europe and all virtual backhaul relies on Gazprom flowing gas through the Velke pipeline into Europe.

Ukraine are still almost entirely at the mercy of Gazprom energy politics
