Israeli news outlets are reporting the leak of a letter from Israeli cabinet minister Yossi Peled to the rest of the nation’s cabinet, cautioning that the Obama Administration was going to adopt “a more balanced approach to Israel, including intensive pressure to stop building in settlements, remove outposts and advance the formation of a Palestinian state.”
It’s hardly earth-shattering in that respect, the administration has been publicly urging Israel to accept exactly that for weeks now. What is noteworthy is Minister Peled’s proposed strategies to combat this, including sanctions against the United States.
In particular, Israel would begin shifting military purchases, the bulk of which come from the US, to other nations, and offering influence to other nations willing to get involved in the peace process in a way more in keeping with Israeli interests. Incredibly enough, Peled, a member of the ruling Likud Party, also proposes political actions which seem to amount to an attempt at regime change in the US.
Peled suggests that the Israeli government become directly involved in next year’s US congressional elections, intervening against Democratic Party candidates in the hopes that the candidates would pressure Obama to adopt a more universally pro-Israel stance.
A course of action that seems more at home on the websites of conspiracy theorists, the revelation that an Israeli minister, in the ruling Likud Party no less, would come out so explicitly in support of taking measures against the US is nothing short of astonishing. The prospect has reportedly concerned US Jewish leaders, who fear an attempt to meddle so directly in American policy might provoke a backlash.
How will our economy ever survive!? Doomed!
One could only hope that the Israelis would be stupid and arrogant enough to do something like that. Please!
Let me get this right. We give billions of taxpayer dollars to them. They give our taxpayer dollars to the defense industry. Here is a new and exciting idea….lets not give them anything, bring all of our troops home and tell them they are on their own. America (taxpayers) First.
They’re not jumping ship over the settlements, but because their sugar daddy is bankrupt and they know the sugar is going to stop flowing, so they’re looking for a new host into which to latch their blood-sucking lips.
Game Over for Israel.
Remember the Liberty!
What a great Idea!! Go for it!! It'z a winnah!! Right on!! Wow!! Smart!! More hubris!! Yaa!!
I'm not surprised at all by this. I think it's way past time we stood up to these assholes. But I doubt anybody in government has the balls.
On top of that, I propose that we impose sanctions on Israel – nothing less than a complete blockade. The UN can set up a program by which Israel can purchase food and medical supplies through a special account funded by neocon nut jobs supporters abroad. Other than that, it's siege time. As for conditions for lifting the siege, Israel has to give up its nuclear weapons and completely dismantle its nuclear energy program, among other things.
Does anyone still need proof that the Israeli government "OWNS" the US Congress? I've never been able to figure out exactly how and why our elected representatives (as if they've ever been interested in representing us) have allowed themselves to be bought by a foreign government. That used to be grounds for treason – if this were a logical world.
"…might provoke a backlash…" If that were only true. Those who put Israel's security before that of the country and people they (US Reps) supposedly represent should be confronted with questions about where their real allegiances really are.
I think dual citizenships should be made illegal for those who serve in Congress. That should be a no-brainer.
It is amazing how little money it takes to buy a congressman. Most of them don't get more than a few thousand dollars from AIPAC. One would think that if you were selling out your country, it would require a great deal of money to salve your conscience, but not the two-bit whores that we continually re-elect they will settle for chump change.
Though I don't think the Netanyahu government is stupid enough to put this plan into action, it does seem to me a recipe for backlash. If there's one lobby that rivals the pervasiveness of the Israel lobby it's the weapons manufacturers. If they start losing money because some right-wing government in Israel is refusing to buy American weapons for their assorted killing needs, it seems very likely they'll turn on that government and have the US start pressuring for a return to the "good ol' days" of Kadima when Israeli wars were fought almost exclusively with American-made weaponry.
Lol The joke of the century
There is nothing new in Peled's threats to use US supplied tax dollars to purchase arms from countries other than the US. This may prevent the Israelis from using US technology to develop their arms industry through which they sell our technology to countries to whom the US would not sell our technology for the past 40 years. (China, Brazil and others).
The Israeli Government has been involved in US elections since the Fullbright days. The Israeli Govt was most certainly involved by laundering US supplied tax dollars in order to give AIPAC money from US taxpayers to elect Dick Durbin and defeat Rep. Charles Findley. The US Congress is indeed "Israeli occupied territory."
