Delivering comments on public radio today, Israeli Army Chief Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz warned Israel faces a “major threat” of a multiple front war involving Hezbollah, Syria and Iran.
Gantz predicted the war would begin with a missile strike on the military’s headquarters, followed by attacks on Israeli troops in the occupied Golan Heights and cyber-attacks from abroad.
“The pastoral landscape of the Golan Heights… could turn with a sudden bang into a battleground of blood, fire and pillars of smoke,” Gantz warned, saying the conflict was within the realm of possibility.
Israeli officials have repeatedly made reference to their belief in this broad war with virtually the whole Shi’ite world, driving their hostility toward those nations. Often unspoken in these assessments is that such a war would be precipitated by an Israeli attack on either Iran or Syria, and that Israel’s impetus for such an attack is weakening them for the very war they’d be starting by attacking.
While generals are in the threat business, it is revealing what Gantz did not say. 1) Israel could reduce the threat by agreeing to many UN resolutions, especially 224 and 338, Land for Peace, which would require its withdrawal from the Palestinian areas conquered in 1967, subject to detailed negotiations. 2) Israel could begin serious negotiations over the Arab Peace Initiative, also based on 224 and 338, in order to secure a full, regional peace. 3) Israel could offer to participate in the creation of a nuclear free Middle East, offering its own bombs as part of the negotiations. But, since Israel attributes real or imagined military threats to irrational and uncontrollable impulses by its neighbors, not its own behavior, no one expects Gantz to offer these obvious non-military solutions.
Whenever a person think that everyone around him is trying to do him harm its a clear sign of mental illness. Don't have to be a "Shrink" to figure that one out.
Dummy Gantz, What do you expect? Attack all you immediate neighbors and think they will cower before you over-inflated ego?
“a battleground of blood, fire and pillars of smoke"
A NEW HOLOCAUST! And then the Mavi Marama attacks!
Really, Mr. Gantz? Well, you sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind. If Israel had been a better neighbor and did not have its own stupid, wild, fantasies of regional dominance, it might not be so derided as a nation.
Can't these never ending lies about the Shiites be construed as bigotry and an attempt at dehumanizing an entire ethno-religious group?
Dah! When a portion of Syria, the Golan Heights, has been stolen from a nation by means of superior war-power, you can be sure that every young person in that country will be raised for the purpose of getting the land back. The Israeli argument of improved security has been passively accepted by the West for too long. Return the Golan now and see if their is greater peace.
Actually I think he is right. And it's their own fault.
